Year 3 go back to the Stone Age!
This week Year 3 travelled back 6 million years to the beginning of our timeline. The children immersed themselves in the life of a stone age person through looking at stone tools that might have been used, creating cave paintings (in a minimalistic amount of light) and learning to start small fires using flint and steel.
The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and showed off their historical knowledge!
Success with our Science Curriculum
We are delighted to share that, after a year's project and assessment, our school has been awarded the Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM)—a nationally recognised accreditation that celebrates excellence in science teaching, leadership, and curriculum development in primary schools. The PSQM framework helps schools evaluate and improve their science provision, ensuring that all children receive a high-quality, engaging science education.
Assessors found that the school has made significant progress in developing its science curriculum and practice. Science was observed to have gained strategic importance, with leadership playing a key role in driving improvements. Children were seen to be more engaged, confident, and curious, particularly through initiatives such as Forest School and outdoor learning. Staff input and training were highlighted as strengths, with resources and teaching strategies being refined based on feedback and impact.
A huge well done to all involved with this work, which has had input from staff, pupils, parents and governors - especially to Mrs Nicholls, as science lead. It is fantastic that this work, and the resulting impact on our children, has been recognised and celebrated!
Sustainability
Earlier this year, we shared with you that, through a grant for Dacorum Borough Council, we have been able to install solar panels onto our Early Years building, which we hope will help to make our school more sustainable and supports us in looking after the world around us.
The works for this were completed this week, with a live tracker being installed which the pupils will be able to use in their learning to see what impact solar panels can help with electricity generation. Using the tracker, we can see that, even just since the start of the school year, we have saved nearly a tonne of carbon; the equivalent of us planting 960 trees!
Harvest Donations
Over the coming days leading up to our pupil Harvest Church Service next Thursday, we are asking for donations of produce and household sundries which will be collected in each classroom before being donated to both St. Mary's Church and DENS to support people in our local community. Please see the list of high-needs items for DENS should you wish to donate. Thank you for your support.
This week’s attendance figures show another strong effort across the school, with Year 1 and Year 5 sharing the top spot at 98.3%—a fantastic achievement and a sign of real commitment from both classes!
Year 3 followed closely with 97.3%, and Year 6 posted a solid 96.9%. Year 2 came in at 96%, while Year 4 and Reception both recorded 92%. Although Reception missed out on the top spot this week, their continued high attendance is impressive, especially after winning two weeks in a row.
Nursery recorded 88%, and we’re hopeful to see their numbers rise again next week.
Well done to everyone for your efforts—let’s keep aiming high and see who will take the crown next week!
Our TTRS leader board this week reflects the studio speed over the last 7 days. There are just 0.08 seconds between the top 2 and 0.35 seconds between 1st and 3rd. Our top 2 are answering questions in under a second! Well done.
