Why learn a second language?

  • Most colleges require a minimum of two years of the same language. Some colleges prefer three or more years. By taking three or more years of the same language, students can show colleges that they are highly motivated, hard-working students.

  • Students who begin taking a language in eighth grade have the opportunity to take advanced placement language at the high school during their senior year.

  • 94% of the world does not speak English as their first language.

  • Research has shown that students who have studied a language have increased standardized test scores on the PSSA, SAT and Keystones.

  • Learning a language increases global understanding and cultural tolerance and increases communication during international travel.

  • Learning a world language helps students better understand how to listen, read, write, speak and improve their knowledge of grammar in their own language.

  • Being proficient in a foreign language can open up career opportunities in many fields and greatly enhances your resume.
