PHYSICAL EDUCATION

OVERVIEW

Students must take one semester of physical education in each of their four years of high school. Course offerings are designed to promote the physical, intellectual and social growth of all students. Thematic units provide for the development of physical fitness, acquisition of knowledge relative to sports and fitness, and the specific skills necessary for enjoyment of a wide range of physical activities. Activities are presented within a supportive atmosphere that promotes respect, understanding and tolerance. Students are expected to display positive social interaction. The ultimate goal is the development of an adult who possesses a positive self-image, an appreciation for the benefits of exercise and an ability to meet the social and physical challenges of life.


9/10 PHYSICAL EDUCATION 

Grades 9-10,  1.25 Credits,  911

Students must pass two semesters of this course to meet graduation requirements. All students will participate in required units entitled Physical Fitness, Pickleball, and Ultimate Games. Elective Units include team sports, lifetime sports, and cooperative games. Students are trained in the skills, rules, strategies, and safety of each activity. Emphasis is placed on increasing confidence in and enjoyment of physical activity.


PHYSICAL EDUCATION LEADERSHIP 

Grade 12,  2.5 Credits,  Level 1,  Semester 1 – 925,   Semester 2 - 926

This course is open to seniors only. Students must receive permission from the physical education staff to elect this course. Under the supervision of the physical education department staff, leaders work directly with students to hone leadership skills. Experiences include small group instruction, officiating, supervision of gym areas and activity planning. Leaders function as role models, providing motivation and enthusiasm to classes. There are three required after-school meetings per semester.


PHYSICAL EDUCATION 

Grades 11-12 

Students must pass two semesters of this course to meet graduation requirements. Each student develops and follows a personal program of improvement from a list of elective activities including Team Sports, Lifetime Sports, Plt4m/Personal Fitness and Contemporary Fitness. All students will participate in a common unit of pickleball during the semester.  Each student selects those activities that help them prepare for lifetime fitness.

TEAM SPORTS 

Grades 11-12,  1.25 Credits,  921

The purpose of this course is to provide learning experiences in a variety of team sports while enhancing personal and social behaviors. The course is also designed to elicit opportunities to advance individual skill levels in different team sports including flag football, soccer/speedball, floor flockey,  ultimate frisbee, basketball and more. They will also be guided through a program that will improve their personal fitness level.  At the end of this course students will be able to apply knowledge and techniques of team sports to maintain an active lifestyle well beyond high school.  


LIFETIME SPORTS  

Grades 11-12,  1.25 Credits,  920

This class is designed to encourage and motivate North Attleboro students to maintain a healthy lifestyle now and for the future. The units offered are designed to instruct the student in activities that will provide a foundation for a healthy, physically active lifestyle in individual, dual and group activities including tennis, disc golf, badminton, spikeball, volleyball and more.  At the end of this course students will be have the knowledge and skill level to continue activities throughout life.   


STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING

Grades 11-12,  1.25 Credits,  919

The Strength & Conditioning course will give students the tools and resources needed to be physically fit and healthy for a lifetime. The variety of exercises, techniques and equipment used will allow students to experience different ways to workout, which will likely lead to the continuation of exercise well beyond high school.  Students will be empowered to make wise choices, meet challenges, and develop positive behaviors in fitness, wellness, and movement activity. 


CONTEMPORARY FITNESS 

Grades 11-12,  1.25 Credits,  918

The purpose of this course is for students to gain confidence, knowledge and a better understanding of one’s own fitness.   Student will take part in Yoga, Dynamic Yoga, Body Weight Fitness, Circuit Training and Fitness Walking as they progressively work to increase flexibility, endurance, muscular balance as it pertains to one's health and well being.  At the end of this course students will be able to create a progressive workout program for lifelong fitness benefits. 


UNIFIED PHYSICAL EDUCATION               

 Grades 11-12,  1.25 Credits,   923

This course is open to juniors and seniors. Students must receive permission from the physical education staff as well as the Special Education Department to elect this course. Under the supervision of the physical education department, students of all abilities will participate in developmentally appropriate activities including lifetime activities, physical fitness and sports. Students will work together to increase competence and confidence in a variety of physical activities. Through ongoing leadership opportunities, members of this course will be empowered to help create a more inclusive and accepting school environment for all students.
