Summer Explore & Discover
You might not be in a school building during the summer, but there's still a lot of learning that will happen. It's easy to incorporate skills that need to be mastered right into fun summer games. Some games naturally help kids have fun with math, like Yahtzee, basic card games, or games with a set of dice.
Roll two dice and add them together.
Write the number sentence. ________ + ________ = ________
You can do the same to practice subtraction, multiplication, division, and fractions.
Probability: Guess how many times you would get a five out of 100 rolls . Then roll one die 100 times and chart out how many times each number comes up.
Play With Math
Think math throughout your daily life in the summer. Talk about numbers and their relationships to everyday items, such as groceries, mail, flowers in the garden etc. Use rulers to measure and show mathematical relationships, such as which cup is taller. Use math words daily by looking at if items are equal, more than or less than.
Summer is a great time to learn or brush up on Telling Time.
Use your daily schedule to introduce or expand on learning time. You can compare digital clocks and analog clocks to be sure children become comfortable with reading both.
Use your outdoor nature adventures to think about time.
Nature Trip Schedule
8:00 breakfast
9:00 walk to the park to observe the birds
Ask " How long after breakfast will we leave for the park?"
Money, Money Money
Whether it's play money or real money, it can be great fun to count up money. There are no fancy games needed just some coins to add up.
How many dimes does it take to make 2 quarters?
Would you trade those 4 dimes for 2 quarters?
Put your hand in a bag of coins and take three, then add up what you chose.
You have 2 dimes and 3 pennies. How many more pennies do you need to have it equal the quarter?
Reading All Summer Long
BOOK TIME: Pick a time each day to spend time with books. Then think of a great name for your book time. Fill a basket with reading material, like magazines, letter, and books. Get creative so that it's something everyone looks forward to. Let everyone choose what they want to read during this time.
