NYSSMA

What is it?

NYSSMA is a professional organization that evaluates student musicians in New York state from elementary school to high school. Each spring, thousands of students register through their school music programs to attend NYSSMA Evaluation Festivals where they are adjudicated.

Why should you participate?

• Get helpful feedback on your singing voice from another teacher/professional
• The chance to work on a challenging solo chosen specifically for your individual voice and ability
• Build sight reading skills
• Step outside of your comfort zone and challenge yourself musically
• Be considered for opportunities such as RPO Holiday Pops Corral, All State ensembles, and other select opportunities.

Can I sing whatever I want?

Students who desire a rating (number score) must choose a solo from the NYSSMA Manual. Students who desire comments only can perform any music and are not required to play scales or sight read. In order to be considered for opportunities such as RPO, Area All County/State you must have a number score. See Ms. Flanigan for NYSSMA song options.
