Developing a Multi-Year Professional Learning Plan focused on Foundational Literacy and Multilingual Learners
Presented by Dr Amy Parangan and Amye Billings-Scott
Vallejo Unified School District
The focus of this collaborative session will be how a local district connected externally provided professional learning with internal professional learning support with a cyclical process. Facilitators will share their process for increasing interest and participation in professional learning centered around foundational literacy in English Language Arts, English Language Development and language development in Math.

Enhancing the Efficacy of the SSTs to Support Emerging Bilinguals
Presented by: Dr. Shehnaz Wadhwania, Coordinator of Language Acquisition

This session will focus on the practical implication of a doctoral (Case) study conducted to assess the sense of self-efficacy of the SST members in the identification of ELs for Special Education Services. Participants will become familiar with some of the strategies and practices that could help SSTs differentiate between language acquisition and reading disability, and ways to support Emerging Bilinguals (EB) students as well as teachers by recommending the appropriate interventions.

Unpacking Systemic Issues: A Comprehensive System for Reclassifying Multilingual Learners and Educational Advancement in Districts

San Mateo-Foster City School District
In this workshop session, we will present an innovative system for reclassifying multilingual students, providing guidelines to determine when a student is ready to transition to a mainstream classroom. The system ensures accurate process and standardized reclassification criteria, minimizing bias and promoting fairness. With a comprehensive and integrated approach encompassing language assessments, teacher evaluations, and grades, this workshop equips participants with the valuable knowledge to foster multilingual students' academic success in an inclusive learning environment.

Why Our Families Keep Coming Back: Making DELAC Relevant and Purposeful

Two years ago, there were only two parents attending our DELAC meetings. We now have around 60-65 participants consistently each time. In this session, participants will hear about some strategies we have used to increase and sustain family engagement by making meetings personal and relevant. Sample activities and strategies to increase participation will be shared.

Expansion of Dual Language Immersion (DLI) Programs

Napa Valley Unified School District
The creation of a language and cultural arts integration middle school in the heart of Napa Valley grew from a strong desire to strengthen Napa Valley Unified School District’s TK-12 dual language immersion (DLI) pathway and provide equitable access to all students. This session will focus on the journey in creating a stronger middle years program, in our existing K-12 DLI pathway, in order to provide equitable access to language development and the arts.

Developing Biliteracy Pathway Recognition Programs for Middle School

San Leandro Unified School District
Establishing clear pathways to biliteracy in middle school is an important step in supporting Multilingual students on the road to biliteracy and in the attainment of the Seal of Biliteracy in high school. In this session I will share our experience as we enter our third year of implementation of the Home Language Development Recognition Award. Attendees will leave with ideas and resources on how to roll out and execute a successful Home Language Development Recognition Award or other pathway to biliteracy at the middle school level.

Authentic Engagement and Empowerment of Latinx Families

Castro Valley Unified School District
Come hear about how one small/mid-sized district was able to authentically engage Latinx families by capitalizing on processes and systems that were already in place to expand the opportunities where the Spanish-speaking community feels valued, elevated, and empowered.
