Topics

Plenary Sessions:

The Sequential Intercept Model (SIM) examines how adults with serious mental illness and/or substance use disorder come into contact with and move through the criminal justice system. Learn how NAMI Indiana certified 26 people to facilitate SIM mapping workshops in Indiana, and hear from members of local planning teams whose communities recently participated in SIM mapping workshops. They will share insights on that process and discuss next steps now that identifying strengths and gaps in their systems has provided a strategic framework to improve systems and support justice-involved individuals in accessing recovery.

This session will dive into a comprehensive overview of the current national landscape of peer services being offered within crisis services across the country. Participants will hear from Amy Brinkley, a national recovery expert from the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors and NAMI National Board Member on the current landscape nationally for peers within crisis services. NASMHPD plays a pivotal role in the public mental health system across the United States and represents 44 + states and territories and is a leader nationally in the development of crisis services. Amy Brinkley is also a person with direct lived experience who has experienced the loss of 3 brothers to suicide. In this presentation participants will leave with the most relevant data on the integration of peer support services within the crisis continuum across the country, exploring how states and territories interpret and implement peer support into their crisis systems as well as what federal guidance has been issued on the inclusion of peers and people with direct lived experience.  Complimenting this expert perspective, the session will feature a poignant personal testimony, offering an intimate view of resilience amidst the broader mental health landscape from Matt Bane, a Certified Peer Support Professional Indiana Trainer with Adult and Child. This unique blend of data driven insights and lived experiences invites participants to engage in a meaningful conversation, fostering a collective understanding and commitment to mental health, crisis services, and peer support nationwide. Participants will leave with a deeper appreciation for the complexities of the crisis continuum, armed with both expert knowledge and the transformative power of personal narratives.
