We are professionals, and the professions we are in are ever changing and expanding as we take on more responsibility. As professionals, we should take full advantage of the professional organization that is available to us. For us, that professional organization is NAEOP.

Some of the benefits available to you by belonging to NAEOP are leadership skills, professional development, certification through the Professional Standards Program, recognition, and networking. Everyone has an equal opportunity to become involved and be a part of the team. You can be the driver of your destiny in your profession and in your professional association by following the six steps below:

1. Participate fully. Listen actively, speak plainly and contribute to every discussion.

2. Increase your self-motivation. Set goals for your job as well as for your participation in NAEOP; make sure to set personal goals for yourself, too.

3. Become a part of the team. Know your goals.

4. Collaborate. Volunteer to serve on committees. Support your colleagues.

5. Know what your employer and your professional association values. When you attend a class, training, or meeting, take it seriously, it’s important for you to learn new skills, to network and meet new people. You can use these things to benefit yourself and your co-workers.

6. Improve your self-confidence. Do not limit yourself. Avoid using words like “can’t” and “won’t,” use instead “I’ll try” or “Can you show me how ….”

By following these steps, you will be well on your way as an active participant in your personal life, your work life, and your NAEOP life.
