This week in 4th class, we have been learning all about length. We used different units to measure length, such as millimetres (mm), centimetres (cm), metres (m), and even practiced writing length as a decimal, bringing in our learning from last week.
We started by using rulers to measure small objects like pencils, books. It was exciting to see the different lengths of our classroom items!
We also measured bigger things, like the classroom door and the whiteboard, using metre sticks and measuring tapes. This helped us understand which units are best for different objects before moving on to using trundle wheels to measure the yard and then race cars and measure their distance.
We discovered that length is very important in everyday life. Builders, tailors, and athletes all use measurement in their work. Now we feel more confident measuring things and choosing the correct unit.
This week, our classroom was buzzing with activity as we explored time through a series of hands-on maths stations. The children rotated around the room, working collaboratively to deepen their understanding of clocks, minutes, hours, and daily routines.
We practiced matching analogue and digital times, working out train times, digital and analogue bingo and building and reading clocks using practical resources. The variety kept everyone engaged and allowed pupils to work at their own pace while supporting one another’s learning.
What really stood out was the level of focus and enthusiasm. The children were confidently explaining their thinking, checking answers together, and using mathematical language naturally as they worked. Learning through play and collaboration helped make a tricky concept feel meaningful and fun.
A great reminder that maths really does come alive when children can move, talk, and explore together!
As you may know, before Christmas we were very excited to connect with a school in Citywest to be penpals to write letters to and recieve letters from!
Today we got a surprise delivery of a new batch of letters - everyone was delighted! We loved hearing the answers to our questions and finding out more information about children in other schools! Next week we will be sure to practice our letter writing skills and get our letters in the post back to our new friends.
A few weeks ago 4th Class went on a nature walk around a local park. It was a beautiful cold and frosty morning - we got to enjoy some rare blue sky's in December!
This was part of our Geography topic - Native Irish Trees! We spotted lots of native trees in our local area, along with different wildlife, non-native trees and of course our local swans! We are really looking forward to visiting again in the Spring and seeing lots of new life!
Last term we learned all about the anchient Irish tradition of the Seanachaí (the storyteller). Some of our adventurous classmates had a go at being the Seanachaí, complete with storytelling hat and stick.
This was a great opportunity for Drama, Oral Language, History and a bit of craic!
What an exciting day we had at this year’s Intel Mini Scientist competition! Our young scientists put tremendous effort, creativity, and enthusiasm into their projects, and it truly showed. The room was buzzing with curiosity as students proudly explained their ideas, demonstrated experiments, and shared what they had learned.
It was wonderful to welcome the parents who were able to come along and see the projects in action. They were delighted to showcase their hard work.
Overall, it was a joyful celebration of science, curiosity, and student talent. We’re already looking forward to next year’s discoveries!
This week in Maths we are focusing on Multiplication! We are using concrete resources like cubes to help us represent different multiplication facts and learn the different properties of multiplication!
By using hands on materials, children are more likely to retain information and improve their critical thinking and problem solving skill. We are also enjoying putting our timestables knowledge to the test through lots of games like Snakes and Ladders, Around the World and Splat!
📵 Screen Free Games 📵
The children in 4th Class had a ball last week at our screen free games workshop, organised by the parent's association!
It was great to see them so excited and engaged without a bit of technology in sight. They loved trying all of the different activities and admired the creativity and craftsmanship that went into creating all of the lovely games.
This was a great team building activity where the children had an opportunity to show off their values of care, respect and responsibility.
🧛🧟Pinch Pot Monsters! 🎃👻
Yesterday, 4th Class made pinch pot clay monsters. They carefully made pinch pots and then creatively added their own spooky monster features!
We used the technique of scratch and slip to stick the features so that they will stick well (hopefully!)
I can't wait to see the finished product.
