Literacy Mats being used in Wood Technology
Reflection is a cornerstone of learning in Wood Technology, where students not only engage in hands-on work but also critically evaluate their own and their peers' projects. However, various obstacles can hinder effective reflection, such as subject knowledge gaps, grammar issues, and spelling errors. To address these challenges, our department often employs tools like literacy mats as seen below.
Literacy mats are visual aids designed to support students in various literacy-related tasks, such as writing, reading comprehension, and vocabulary development. In the context of Wood Technology, these mats are tailored to address specific challenges students may encounter when reflecting on their work or providing feedback.
These can be applied through google classroom or else printed out, paminated and stuck on to the tables.

Proof of Pythagorean Theorem
Our Transition Year students explored one of the most important Mathematical proofs last week. The Theorem of Pythagoras has been used for hundreds of years with many real life applications. Before solving problems students deducted a physical proof of the theorem by constructing 4 equal right angled triangles out of a square. By rearranging we can show that the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares on the remaining sides

As part of the JC maths curriculum, students learn about the Cartesian Plane. The Cartesian plane was firstly published in 1637, by a mathematician Rene Descartes. Descartes came up with the plane when he was ill in bed one day, and a fly was on his ceiling. He wandered if he could pinpoint the exact location of the fly using mathematics, and designed a grid, now known as the Cartesian plane. Students in Oak1 learned about coordinates and the plane by using a fly cutout, to demonstrate Descartes’ way of thinking. Students were asked to place the fly at random locations on their planes, and to write its location down. They were asked to come up to the board, and demonstrate where the fly should be positioned when given a set of coordinates. Then, to sum up the lesson, students came up and placed the fly at random, for their classmates to guess the location. They then wrote it on their whiteboards, and had to hold it up for the student at the board to check their answers. It was an engaging and interactive activity, as students had great fun with the flies and coming up to the board.

Have a look at some of the examples of handmade bookcrafts that Ms. C.O’Sullivan’s first year Art class have been working on for the past few weeks. The students used numeracy tactics and origami techniques to create the insides of their books and decorated them with the Elements of Art, revising and applying their learning from before Christmas. They also measured and completed the covers of their books using the paper marbling technique. Great fun was had making both the “exploding” books and the concertina books which are currently being filled with imaginative drawings.

27th January 2022
Last week, Ms. Kearns used the Castle Defense revision game with 6th year business - each team draws a castle on the board and takes it in turns to ask questions based on types of business organisations. If the team receiving the question answers correctly, they get to "attack" two castles, if they get it wrong the team asking the question gets to attack a castle.
24th January 2022
My 5th years used different types of crisps today to introduce them to using comparative language. Students were given different types of crisps and asked to compare them under three headings, similar to the modes prescribed for Leaving Cert English. Once they had completed their comparison they had to pull out any vocabulary they used to compare. This aided in the creation of a word bank for their comparative section of their course. Ms C.Dunne

Great fun was had in Ms.Kearns’ third year business studies class - They played "splat" which is a game where the class is split into two teams and a representative from each team has a fly swatter and has to listen to definitions being called out and slap the corresponding key term on the board. This was based on the taxation chapter we just finished.

Sketch Notes for 1st and 2nd Years
Sketch-noting is a form of note taking that uses words but also visuals or pictures. It works because when you add visuals or sketches to your notes it taps into parts of your brain that would lie dormant if you were only using words to explore your ideas. It’s powerful because we are simultaneously activating different parts of the brain - the words part, the ideas part, and the pictures part. In deciding what to draw to illustrate their notes, students are thinking about the learning topic in different, sometimes more intense, ways.
It also works well for students because there isn’t a strict format. The student can make their own decisions and represent them on paper. Later, they have to interpret their own drawings and remember what they were trying to represent. Again, different parts of the brain are activated at the same time, increasing the chances of moving the newly learned stuff from the working memory to the long term memory. And that’s the goal in teaching and learning, always.
The workshop on sketch-notes provided students with a variety of tools to choose from so they can create their own customized note- taking process. This means students decide on what works well for them and their personality. Some people like to doodle, so their notes might end up full of pictures and sketches. Others prefer working with words and so their notes might just bring in labels and diagrams to help organise their words.
The point of notes is to capture important ideas for future reference. While it’s nothing new to take notes that combine images with words and phrases, sketch notes are an evolution of this idea. As an English teacher, I taught only a handful of note-taking styles, primarily combination notes, different graphic organisers, Cornell notes, and a kind of weird mnemonic type thing of single letters and numbers that only a few students ever understood! As a matter of differentiation, I’d provide templates or examples of outline-style notes but that was it.
Sketch notes are better because they don’t just capture ideas, they tell a story. And that matters because we all - young and old, across all cultures and backgrounds - love a good story. The TV and film industries, the video game industry, billion-dollar advertising campaigns, thespians, and musical artists all live and die by their ability to relay a story we can connect with. Shakespeare is still taught because he tells a great story! If students can learn to tell a story as they make their notes, that means they can curate their own notes (revising without realising it!) and share them. If they have worked hard at their sketch notes, and enjoyed it, and they look elegant – then they’ll share them. That is really important for the peer and collaborative aspects of studying, which in their Senior Cycle years will become a life saver.

Last week 5th years who had finished reading A Dolls house were given a grid (with themes on the horizontal and acts 1-3 on the vertical) to fill in with key information from the play in pairs. Once they had that filled in we used “market place” a Paul Guinis active methodology (more information below) to fill in the rest of the grid. One of the pair remained behind while the other partner found out the missing information from other groups. The student who remained behind, taught the other groups. Students then had a few minutes to teach their partner.
By the end of the lesson all students had filled in their grid and knew the themes in ADH effectively and efficiently.
“The best way to learn is to try and teach.”
Divide the class in groups.
Have each group of the class try to create lessons, teaching something new to one of the other group.
Rotate and have each group of the class try to learn from the lessons created by another group of the class.
Then have the students who just learned the material try to produce their own lessons, improving on the lessons produced by their peers.
By having the students create lessons to teach each other the project has more purpose to it and there’s immediate feedback about pupils knowledge.
Ms E. O'Sullivan

With 13.5 weeks left until the mocks, Ms Carty’s 3rd year Classics spent the class creating a study timetable and a revision key sheet based on each of the four sections the cover from 1st to 3rd year. They have just been given the sample exam for the topic so used this alongside their learning outcomes to make sure they captured all areas for revision.
5th November
Today in Ms Carty’s 2ENG class, students used graphic organisers to do a chapter analysis, using titles connected to exam questions. Their plot mountain and novel wall are coming along nicely and they’re exploring lots of different ways to revise chapters.
4th November
Ms Dunphy’s 2nd Year Philosophy class were learning about Plato before the break, and explored the idea of Plato’s Allegory of the Cave. Plato used a dark cave and the light of the world to explain how humans engage with reality, which is considered a very big philosophical question. Ms Dunphy posed the same question to class, and challenged them to draw a picture which symbolises what the students feel life is. The students then worked together to display their posters in room 14 to hopefully carry on the conversation for all of the school community who might see their ideas.
21st October
Ash 2 created some great presentations on the topic of Halloween Vs Guy Fawks. Some very interesting facts were discovered. Students were allowed to present their projects in any medium they wished. It was great to see such engagement from students!

I used a Marketplace activity in my second year Classics class this week and students did an excellent job. This was a great activity to use in the small class setting. Students were divided into groups of three or four and given time to research their designated myths. After this, students had time to create a poster for their myth, using primarily pictures, symbols and numbers. The only rule was that they could only use 8 words in their posters. This poster would be used in the final marketplace activity. During the Marketplace activity, one student stayed at their desk to teach their myth with the help of their poster and the others moved around to learn about the other two myths. The roles of “teacher” and “student” were rotated until everyone had an opportunity to teach. Peer teaching is one of the best ways to retain new information. Here are some photos of the students in action!

Ms Dunphy’s third years were completing groupwork on Romeo and Juliet in class today. Having finished some of the written exercises, and while looking through the scene for quotes, some of the students decided to spontaneously start to perform some of Act 3, Scene 1 in their group. Ms Dunphy sat with them and caught some of the action on camera.
Full credit to the students in question: Kian Doyle, Tomas Cully and Kiefer Boakye Yiadom

Second year history students finished off their study of the Plantations using a blockbuster game. Students create their questions and answers based off the chapter. They then swap them and their grids with another team who has to answer them correctly. The team splits into two and they are against each other to get the most answers right or 5 correct in a row wins.
Thanks to Ms R. Kearns for the idea. --

12th October- Modelling in 5th Year Biology
Student will work in pairs to model each phase of cellular division
using their model making packs. Using the pack they will build a model
of each phase to demonstrate mitosis of a diploid cell. They then take
a picture of each phase on their ipads and label each structure/phase
on the images. All four images are then combined into a pic collage
and saved by students for later revision. Optional activity - students
can cast their images to the board and describe to the class the
events taking place during each phase.

1st Year SPHE - Belonging to the class
It is important for our first year’s to transition positively coming into our school. We recognise that it can be difficult for some of our students to make the leap into secondary school and our 1st Year SPHE programme helps with numerous activities and strategies in the classroom. Being a part of the 1st Year SPHE team, we have worked hard with our 1st years to make the classroom environment as safe and comfortable as possible. One activity that was carried out was working together to create a physical and digital representation on what it means to be a part of the class and that sense of belonging.

6th year Business
Students had to make a board game using a "blockbuster" board and flash cards containing questions on the last chapter they finished; "monitoring the business". Each flash card question had a corresponding honeycomb piece on the blockbuster board. Students in teams had to select a colour and take turns asking their opponents questions from the flash cards. If answered correctly, the opponent gets to colour the corresponding honey comb piece in their colour. If answered incorrectly, the team asking the question got to fill it in their colour. The team with the most coloured honeycomb pieces at the end wins!

First year poetry. Practicing onomatopoeia recognition and Oral performance skills using On the Ning Nang Nong by Spike Milligan.
24th September
Ms.O’Sullivan’s 5th Year Art class used placemats to describe, analyse, interpret and judge famous artworks as part of their Visual Studies. In pairs, students were given an unseen artwork and had to fill their placement in with limited information and I focus on “reading” and artwork. The students were then allowed to use their iPads to find out the name of the artwork, the year it was painted and the name of the artist. After each this activity, the class participated in a “ghost walk” to see the other groups’ images and interpretations of the artworks.
20th September
Students had to listen to me describe a monster in Spanish (eg. “tiene siete brazos con rayas de color rosa y verde”/“it has seven arms with pink and green stripes”) and draw their interpretation of the instruction they heard. The students then did a “monster walk” around the room to compare the different monsters. Credit to Ms. Kinsella for the idea.
17th September
Here are a handful of display projects by Mr.McNairney’s Elm1 History class. This activity was an introduction to the subject in general and the students created individual research projects to learn about the work of the historian

Ms C. Ennis- Strategy Used: Speed Dating in the basketball court.
5th Year Irish Gnathleibhéal class took place outside in the basketball court.
This was to ensure students had an appropriate space to practice their Irish Oral skills.
Students were well spaced out in pairs and this created a safe and trusting environment. From previous experience, some students don’t like to practice in a crowded room where they can be overheard by other students. This gave students the opportunity to work in pairs. It also gave myself as a teacher an opportunity to work with students on pronunciation that they were struggling with. Every 5 minutes students moved to a new partner. This gave students an opportunity to improve and become confident as they moved from student to student. Students really enjoyed this and it allowed them to improve on feedback given to them and become more confident speaking with their peers. Students did an exit ticket giving feedback on how they felt the lesson went for them.
15th Sept 2021
Ms. Kinsella’s 3rd year Spanish students were carrying out a listening activity earlier today where Ms. Kinsella described a monster in Spanish, using the body parts, colours and numbers learnt in class. Some excellent interpretations here!
