- Students will be asked to consolidate and summarize their mathematical understanding of specific topics in a Learning Log. Prompts for Learning Log reflections are marked with the icon shown at right. These prompts offer students a chance to reflect on their learning from the current lesson or section and to describe their understanding in their own words. Often, these reflections will provide closure to a lesson.
- While some teachers collect Learning Logs regularly to monitor students’ learning, others have students use them as a personal resource. Either way, reflection is critical for making connections and consolidating ideas. Be sure to set up the Learning Logs in a manner that makes sense for your students, and then continue to encourage students to do their best to explain their understanding.
- If you intend for your students to use their Learning Logs as a reference tool, it is important that you help students know if their entries are complete and accurate. After providing students time to reflect individually on a concept or lesson, you can create a class Learning Log entry or a class list containing the essential ideas that students should have in their entry. For example, if the prompt asks students to describe what they learned about the effect the value of the lead coefficient (a) has on the graph of a parabola, then a class list might include ideas such as, “When a is positive, the graph goes up,” or “As a gets bigger, the parabola stretches vertically.” Students should be asked to show why each statement makes sense. Students should always be encouraged to revise or extend their entries as their understanding grows. Chapter Closure is a good time to have students edit, revise, and rewrite their Learning Log entries with input from team members and the teacher.
