TIDE Talks aim to expose students to a variety of different careers and entrepreneurs, which helps them broaden their vision of success.
Your real-world stories help students apply their knowledge from our future-focused program to the real world.
Students form valuable connections with community leaders and will take inspiration from your stories of leadership.
TIDE Talks contribute to Legacy's objectives that upon graduation, students will...
About our School: Legacy Magnet Academy is a business-focused school that emphasizes technology, innovation, design, and entrepreneurship (TIDE). This emphasis is embedded into our core classes and students learn the core subjects alongside TIDE elements. This is enabled by the Project Based Learning (PBL) model which requires students to use TIDE elements to demonstrate their knowledege of academic subjects, enabling them to develop proficiency in both simultaneously. Students also develop important 21st century skills, such as collaboration, conflict resolution, time management, and organization.
School Vision: Legacy's educational goal is to teach students to transfer their knowledge to real-world applications beyond the classroom, rather than to a test. In doing so, students will graduate from the program with a broad base of knowledge beyond the traditional academic discipines that includes pratical real-world experience, ultimately helping them to suceed in an ever-chanigng world.
TIDE Talks are held on Fridays in a classroom at Legacy. Talks take around 30-45 minutes. The students in the classroom where the talk is held will be the live audience, and these students will also ask questions after your talk if time permits. After filling out the interest form, Mrs. Murphy will reach out to you to schedule a time for your talk.
The Associated Student Body (ASB) technology team will record your talk in the style of a traditional TED Talk. Your talk will then be edited down to around 15-20 minutes, and shown to students when the next speaker comes in (this means that the previous month's recorded talk will be playing in the other classrooms while your live talk is being held). After the shortened talk, students will participate in an activity planned by ASB to reinforce the concepts you shared in your talk.
Recorded TIDE Talk Examples
ASB has prepared several resources to help you create your talk. We recommend using these materials to ensure you include the most relevant points to our students, however, please feel free to include whatever you'd like or structure your talk the way you prefer.
TIDE Talk Speaker Handbook (click here to access) - Includes a detailed outline of information to include, as well as examples from a variety of careers for each part of the outline. It also includes the slide template.
TIDE Talk Slide Template (click here to make a copy) - The template follows the handbook's structure in slideshow format. The slideshow is in Google Slides, however, by clicking File in the top left of the screen > Download as > PowerPoint, you can get it in a PowerPoint format.
You do not have to create your presentation on our template, please feel free to use the same bullet points and questions on a separate file or company template if you'd prefer.
Please email your slides to jmurphy@tustin.k12.ca.us before your talk or bring your computer with your slides on the day of your talk. ASB will need to save a copy to use when editing.
