 Course Requirements

9th Grade

STREET LAW (0.5 Credit- Speech, 0.5 Credit- Law Studies)

Street Law teaches and fosters critical thinking and analytical skills, while reinforcing a common-sense approach to problem-solving. Students will learn the foundations of our legal system and how those foundations continue to shape and guide our society today in a manner in which students can connect. Students will learn about some of the most famous and controversial legal cases in history and will have the opportunity to come to their own conclusions about the outcomes of those cases. Above all, students will develop and hone skills that will continue to serve them well beyond the classroom in an exciting and interactive environment.

10th Grade

COMPREHENSIVE LAW HONORS (1 Credit) 

Comprehensive Law Studies teaches that the American legal system is the foundation of American society. Students will examine the components and processes associated with the American legal system and are provided with a comprehensive examination of the civil and criminal justice systems. The course will cover civil, criminal, business, juvenile, and family law. Students will think critically about and evaluate social values and their impact on the establishment and interpretation of laws, causes and consequences of crime, and the reasons for the distinctions between the adult and juvenile justice systems. Students will also get the opportunity to present cases and argue cases in mock trial exercises

11th Grade

CONSTITUTIONAL LAW HONORS (1 CREDIT)

This course consists of the following content area strands: American History, World History, Geography, Humanities, Economics, and Civics and Government. The primary content for the course pertains to the study of major legal precedents and evolving judicial interpretations associated with the United States Constitution.

12th GRADE

DUAL ENROLLMENT with Seminole State College (1 Credit)

This is the fourth year of the Law Studies Program of Emphasis. The two courses offered through SSC will be PLA 2273 (TORTS)  in the Fall, and Business Law (BUL2241) in the Spring. Students must have a 3.0 GPA in order to participate in Dual Enrollment.

Extra-Curricular Opportunities

Law Club

Law Club is a group of legal studies students who are interested and enthused about the law. They work on Law Day as well as other law-related activities and volunteering. They meet bi-monthly at the school and offer leadership opportunities as president, vice president, or cabinet positions for students. 

Youth in Government

Youth in Government is a state assembly in the spring of each year for students to participate in all three branches of government. Students can participate at state and national levels in the legislative branch.

FLRE- Mock Trial 

Mock Trial is part of a national competition in the state of Florida for LMHS POE students. The district meet is in February, and state meet is in March of each year. Lake Mary High School placed 1st in the district level in 2016 and was 8th over all in the state of Florida.

We The People

We The People is a national program for students in Constitutional Law. Students compete at the state level every January for a chance to represent Florida in the national competition.

FLRE Moot Court

Moot Court is a competition allowing students to argue a brief at a mock Supreme Court Hearing.

Project Citizen

Project Citizen has students compete for the best piece of legislation in the State of Florida.
