About AVID

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a college-readiness program that prepares students kindergarten through 12th grade for college eligibility and success. Established more than 35 years ago with one teacher in one classroom, AVID now impacts more than 1.2 million students in 44 states and 16 other countries and territories. AVID is for all students but targets those who are in the academic middle. It supports students and educators as they increase school-wide/district-wide learning and performance. AVID is not just another program. At its heart, AVID is a philosophy:

Hold students accountable to the highest standards, provide academic and social support, and they will rise to the challenge.

AVID Mission

AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. Within AVID, students are able to:

succeed in rigorous curriculum

complete a rigorous college preparatory path

enroll in college

become educated and responsible participants and leaders in their communities and our society

AVID at Trabuco Hills

Here at Trabuco Hills, AVID is a growing program for students who possess the motivation and the raw ability to succeed in high school and college. The goal of our program is to provide a targeted group of these already-capable students with the guidance and support they need to succeed not only at Trabuco Hills, but beyond their high school careers.  AVID methodologies focus on writing, inquiry, collaboration, and reading. Several benefits await prospective AVID students. AVID is a “class community” composed of peers, teachers and peer tutors geared towards encouraging academic and personal success.  AVID teachers coach students through high school course selection, high stakes test preparation, and college applications.  As an integral part of the program, AVID students are guided through the college selection and application process, and are expected to apply to and potentially attend a four-year college.
