GRADE 12 (ENG4U)

Week 1: 

Students are asked to acquire the Imprints 12 textbook and a separate English binder. 

Week 2: 

We will begin by exploring the Elements of Fiction and introducing the concept of Literary Criticism. 

Week 3: 

This week we’re continuing our look at Archetypal Literary Criticism. We’ll be working on Archetype group presentations (due Tueesday) as well as reviewing The Elements of Fiction. There will be time in class for the group work.

Week 4:

This week we are finishing up our look into Archetypal Literary Criticism. Presentations will take place in class at the start of the week. There will be a test on Literary Criticism, The Elements of Fiction and Archetypes on Wednesday.

Test review – make sure you study and are familiar with the following elements:

• What is literary criticism?

• Archetypal literary criticism, Jungian roots and Northrop Frye’s interpretation

• Elements of fiction and story review

• Greek origins of story and Greek dramatic terms

• Hero’s Journey

• Irony and its 3 types

The test will be broken into 3 parts:

• short answer content questions

• a few long answer thinking and application questions

• a short story sight passage in which you will have to analyse archetypal elements

Be sure to study your notes and be familiar with definitions and application of terms.

Week 5: 

This week we will be continuing our discussion of Feminist Literary Critique by analyzing the short story 'The Yellow Wallpaper". Students will be writing their own personal response to the story. Students will also begin to read their own novel in class to prepare for their literary critique book report assignment. We will begin to look at Register and Level of Language towards the end of the week.

Week 6: 

This week we will be continuing our discussion on Language Register by looking at a few short stories. We will also be moving into Reader Response Literary Critique and analyzing that lens. There will be a test next week on Literary Criticisms studied so far.

Week 7: 

This week we will be continuing to look at Reader Response Literary Critique, and evaluate a few literary works using this lens. There will be a test on the different Literary Criticism Types including: Archetypal, Feminist, Language Register and Reader Response. Students will be provided with review prior to the test.

• Literature Circles & Reader's Journals Due 

Week 8: 

This week we will be finishing up Unit 1: Literary Criticism. Students will be assigned an in class task to view a movie and write a literary critique using all four types studied. We are also starting our second unit on Friday, and students will need to purchase the novel The Great Gatsby from the Finance Office.

Week 9: 

This week marks the start of Unit 2: Novel Study. We will be looking at the historical background of the novel The Great Gatsby, as well as exploring the themes presented in the novel.

Week 10: 

This week we are reading chapters 1-3 of The Great Gatsby. Students will be having their first literature circle on Friday to discuss the chapters in depth.

Week 11: 

This week we will be reading chapters 4-5 of the novel and having our literature circles take place. Students will be quizzed on chapter 4.

Week 12: 

This week we will be analyzing chapters 5-6 of The Great Gatsby. Chapter questions are for homework after every chapter. There will be a Literature Circle on Chapters 4-6 on Friday.

Week 13: 

This week we will be having a field trip to the University of Ottawa on Wednesday. We will also extend out Literature Circle and complete the required sections of the packet. We will be reading chapter 7 of The Great Gatsby and working on the chapter questions and exit slip.

Week 14: 

This week we will be wrapping up The Great Gatsby. We will have a Literature Circle on chapters 7-9. Students will be presenting on symbols/motifs from the novel in groups of 3 on Friday.

Week 15: 

This week we will be finishing The Great Gatbsy Presentations. We will also be watching the movie and then have test review on Thursday. The Unit Test will be on Friday Dec 13th.

Week 16: 

This week we will be having our Socratic Debates on selected topics from The Great Gatsby. Towards the end of the week students will be given essay topics to brainstorm for an in class essay due Friday.

Week 19: 

This week we will begin reading Shakespeare's Hamlet. Students will have Act questions to work on for homework. There will be a quiz on Act 3 next Monday.

Week 20: 

This week we are continuing to read Hamlet. Students will also be given their Summative Tasks to work on independently. Students will have a quiz on Act 3 on Monday as well as a group presentation on Act 4.
