Little unknown black history fact

famous blacks & adventist

Excerpt from a Compilation by Benjamin Baker

It's amazing how many famous black people are, or have been, Seventh-day Adventists! The list of onetime Adventists includes a US president's grandfather, America's best authors, the world's fastest person to one of the greatest basketball players of all time.

Let's not forget the most influential civil rights leaders, the greatest rap groups of all time, the father of rock and roll and other Grammy award-winning musicians, and elite physicians. Their influence has spanned the globe and transformed our modern world. While there are over one hundred famous blacks with a relationship to the Seventh-day Adventist Church, we will spotlight a few.

Judge Greg Mathis was baptized by Calvin Rock and attended City Temple SDA in Detroit, Michigan. He credits Adventism, and particularly Calvin and Clara Rock, with making him who he is today.

Magic Johnson was around ten years old when his mother became Seventh-day Adventist. The family followed for a while. His mother is an Adventist to this day. In May 2016 he was awarded the Humanitarian Award by Oakwood University Church where he also pledged $550,00 to the church and school.

Malcom X was a Seventh-day Adventist from 1934-1937, when his mother converted to the faith in Lansing, MI. He said of the Adventists that he encountered that "they were the friendliest folk I had ever seen"

Brandie Sutton was born and raised Seventh-day Adventist and graduated from Oakwood University. She has sung in internationally renowned competitions. She made her solo recital debut at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.; appeared at Merkin Concert Hall in Lincoln Center; and made her concert debut at Carnegie Hall.

K - 12 updates

boys Varsity Basketball team makes state championships

On Wednesday the OAA Administration gathered student body and staff in the gym to celebrate our boys varsity basketball team who for the first time in 14 years will be going to the regional finals in Jacksonville this weekend. You will also notice the new inductees for the National Honor Society are pictured as well. We wanted to capture the importance of performing academically which is a requirement for performing athletically.

Principal Dent asked for Pastor Taylor to pray over our varsity boys basketball team. The prayer is for God to continue to cover them. We also solicit your prayers as well. Tomorrows game is in limbo as we seek relief from game time to accommodate our religious beliefs.

As it stands we are scheduled to play Faith Christian at 4:30 p.m. However, with Oakwood being a Seventh-day Adventist K-12 school, the tenets of our church preclude our students from engaging in physical activity from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday, which tomorrow is around 5:31 p.m.

Continue to keep the school, team, the administration in prayer as we work to advocate while upholding our beliefs. Forfeit or not, the team along with some of its supporters still plan to show up and support the other 1A teams who will be playing tomorrow evening.

Mask Reminder

Parents please be reminded that we offer disposable mask as a courtesy. We have too many students reporting to school without mask. This is gentle reminder to be sure to send your child(ren) with a mask daily. Thanks so much!

Fourth Grade celebrates black history month

Red Day + Principal's breakfast Recap

The senior class got creative in providing different ways for students, parents and staff to spread love on Valentine's Day.

These baskets were one of the ways to surprise the unexpected recipient with a bundle of joy and love.

It was also very sweet to see father's keeping up with their Valentine's day traditions with their daughters. Stacy Kelsay shared "I always wanted our daughter Laci to feel special...I've been doing this since she was in the 1st grade."

A and A+ Principal's List scholars also had the opportunity to dine with Principal Dent for a tasty breakfast lovingly prepared by Chef David + Lady Chef of 2 Men In A Kitchen.

Happy Birthday Principal dent

In honor of her upcoming birthday on February 19th, we celebrated a little early. Yesterday afternoon the students, teachers and staff surprised Principal Dent. We showered her with birthday messages, balloons flowers and cake!

Students should assume the full school uniform is required every school day, regardless of the weather, unless there is written notification of a non-uniform day. When in doubt, students should wear the school uniform. Each student/family is expected to comply with the school’s dress standards as outlined in the OAA Parent & Student Handbook.
