Half Day for Students: PD | March 2, 2026
SY 2025-2026 | Q3. Issue 9 |February 27, 2026
OAA Mustangs!
As we prepare to “spring forward” and adjust our clocks for Daylight Saving Time, we encourage our students, staff, and families to also adjust with purpose.
The time change may seem small, but even one hour can impact sleep, focus, mood, and productivity. Here are three quick tips to help our OAA community transition smoothly:
1. Shift Bedtime Gradually |Begin going to bed 15–20 minutes earlier a few days before the time change to help your body adjust naturally.
2. Prioritize Rest & Routine | A consistent bedtime routine, limiting screen time, preparing clothes and lunches the night before, and setting alarms early sets the tone for a calm and successful morning.
3. Embrace the Light | Longer days are a gift. Use the extra daylight for outdoor activity, family walks, reading, or quiet reflection.
The Bible reminds us:
“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” — Psalm 90:12
Wishing you a smooth transition and a bright, productive spring season ahead!
Enjoy issue 9 of Mustang News!
Blessings,
The OAA Administration
Last weekend, Oakwood Academy sent two teams to Collegedale to compete in the Tennessee Regional FIRST LEGO Robotics Tournament. The competition was intense, but both teams rose to the challenge presenting confidently and managing their robots with skill and determination.
As final scores were announced, Team Last Dig secured an impressive 8th place finish, and Team Deserted earned 3rd place overall, along with a tie for the Project Innovation Award. Their outstanding performance has qualified Team Deserted for the Championship Competition on May 3rd in the Orlando area!
We are extremely proud of both teams for their hard work, teamwork, and accomplishments. They represented Oakwood Academy with excellence!

We are proud to celebrate Ms. Lori Meikle, a valued parent in the OAA community, for receiving the 2025 Department of War Outstanding Civilian Employee Award!
On December 15, 2025, the Secretary of War issued a directive recognizing the top 10% of exceptional civilian personnel who demonstrated sustained outstanding performance throughout 2025. Out of 165,000 military and civilian employees under Army Materiel Command, Ms. Meikle was selected as one of only nine awardees within her reporting area, a true testament to her dedication and excellence.
This prestigious recognition comes with a monetary award, acknowledging her outstanding contributions while serving under the Command Group (Commander, Deputy Commander, Chief of Staff, and supporting directorates).
We are thrilled to see Ms. Meikle’s hard work and commitment celebrated at such a high level. Please join us in congratulating her on this well deserved honor!

Our classrooms went all out to honor Black History Month with intentional, hands-on projects that celebrated history, creativity, and learning.
Students explored and expressed their knowledge in a variety of ways, including:
Living Black Wax Museum: Students brought history to life by portraying influential Black figures, sharing their stories with classmates and visitors.
Pizza & Cereal Box Reports: Creative presentations transformed everyday items into engaging history projects.
Biography Bottle: Innovative student projects showcased important historical figures or cultural concepts inside decorated bottles, blending artistry with learning.
From grades K–12, our students demonstrated thoughtfulness, creativity, and pride in celebrating Black history.
Take a moment to enjoy the pictorial tour of their amazing work. It’s inspiring to see history come alive through the eyes of our students!
We kicked off Black History Month with a powerful cultural experience as students, parents, staff, alumni and friends gathered to witness the stage dramatization of James Weldon Johnson’s God’s Trombones: Seven Sermons in Verse, produced by Danita Jones at Oakwood University Church.
This special production brought Johnson’s timeless poems to life, honoring the richness of the African American oral tradition and spiritual heritage. Through dramatic storytelling, spoken word, and inspiring performances, attendees were reminded of faith, resilience, and the enduring power of history.
Our OAA community had so much to celebrate:
Students and staff lit up the stage with dynamic dance performances.
Parents and alumni shared their gifts, lifting voices in song alongside our students.
And overall, we could feel God moving in every moment of this unforgettable experience.
As a sweet touch, all OAA students in attendance were treated to a special treat as a small way to honor their participation and excitement for this meaningful event.
Mrs. Drake’s first-grade class recently brought their dreams to life with a creative project inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s iconic speech, “I Have a Dream…”
Each student wrote their personal vision for the world on a thought bubble, then carefully cut out their picture and bubble to glue onto black construction paper. The result? A stunning display of young minds imagining a brighter, kinder, and more inclusive world.
What makes this project truly special is how each student’s portrait perfectly captures the sense of deep thought and reflection, as if they are truly envisioning something bigger and better for people everywhere. These thoughtful creations are a reminder of the power of imagination and hope, qualities we celebrate at OAA every day.
Our curious second graders recently dove into the fascinating world of germs and bacteria! With guidance from Mr. Ross, one of our high school science teachers, students engaged in an interactive discussion about how germs spread and why hygiene is so important.
The highlight of the lesson was a hands-on science lab where students swabbed different areas to discover where germs are hiding, a fun and eye-opening experience that brought science to life right before their eyes.
Through activities like this, our students learn not only scientific concepts but also practical lessons about health, safety, and taking care of themselves and others.
We love seeing our students curious, engaged, and excited to explore the world around them!
