Summer Reading Challenge 2023

Welcome to 6th grade ELA!

Dear Families,

This website is meant to serve as a hub of communication for all things ELA. On this site you will find information regarding current assignments, helpful curriculum resources, and useful links. You can find daily homework assignments on the calendar below, though students' agenda books will be the most reliable source of information regarding homework. There are also links to other grade 6 teacher pages to ease navigation between our classrooms.

This year the middle school ELA department is shifting gears with a focus on a reading and writing workshop model. Reading units include: A Deep Study of Character, nonfiction, poetry, and a dystopian novel study. Writing units will consist of narratives, informational writing, and literary analysis. Throughout the year we will use mentor texts and independent reading for vocabulary and language studies.

Because the reading workshop model focuses on independent reading, I ask families to be involved in this process. Middle school can be a tricky time to select developmentally appropriate books. I do not know every detail of every book on my shelf, nor do I remember every detail of the books I may recommend to students. That being said,  as I get to know your children and families, I'm happy to help with the book selection process.

I offer extra help by appointment; please give me at least a day's notice to arrange this.

Sincerely,

Kristen Sullivan
