What is my favorite year/body style of the Ford Mustang?
The Ford Mustang was first introduced in 1964, it was not a very fast car, it was a pony car. After immediately being mass produced, the Ford Mustang soon started to take aim at becoming an iconic image of American Cars. In my personal opinion, I was never a fan of the classic mustangs. I am someone who loves to to race and get the thrill of speed, and the Classics are more for show and to me, I don't really see a point investing in something that will be mostly for show. I was never much of a fan of any mustang bodystyle up until the Fox Body. The Fox Body mustang was not made until 1973 and lasted all the way to 1993 with only slight changes. In my opinion, the Fox Body Mustangs are by far the easiest mustangs to work on and make fast. The way they are setup and designed is a reason why they are so popular on the drag strip. They do look pretty nice when fully restored with newer aftermarket parts, but they are not may favorite mustang.
My favorite mustang bodystyle is the New Edge bodystyle. Which were produced from the years of 1999-2004. In these years there were the V6 and the GT, but from 99-01, there was the SVT Cobra, equipped with a 4 valve 4.6L N/A engine. In 03-4, there were the Mach 1’s, and last but not least, the SVT Cobra, aka the Terminator. The 03-4 Cobra’s are my favorite mustangs ever to be produced. They are considered to be the American Supra. It is very common to push 700 horsepower on the stock block on these motors. They are so easy to make fast, in my opinion, it is the best bang for your buck mustang ever built and manufactured. Not only are the very fast, I think they are one of the best looking body styles, the appearance on them is very aggressive and I love the design.
If I had to choose a Mustang as a drift car, which year would I pick?
I am a huge fan of drifting, and two of my biggest inspirations that dragged me into the whole mustang drift car scenario would be Vaughn Gittin Jr. and Topnotch S197. My entire life I saw drifting as a useless and stupid hobby. I always thought having the fastest straight line car would be my interest and passion in the car world. But one day it hit me. I started following Formula Drift a little bit, and as a die hard Mustang fan, I came across Vaughn Gittin Jr and his RTR Mustang. I started slowly learning to drift on my own in empty parking lots where I soon started to get comfortable with the sport. To now being able to comfortably drift any turn that approaches and awaits me. Drifting takes a lot of time and passion to master. I would consider myself very good at the art of drifting and I know quite a bit about it, but I am nowhere near what it takes to take part in Formula D. This is my history of getting into the sport of drifting, so now let's get onto the topic.
As it is, I never saw drifting as becoming one of my passions in life, and if I did I would never see myself choosing a mustang for this. In the near future I plan on purchasing my own New Edge Mustang GT and plan on redoing the entire suspension, gutting it, and adding some engine bolt ons and maybe some low boost. There are many reasons why I want this as a drift car, but the main reason comes down to money and parts. So many people choose older imports as a drift car, for a lot of these cars, they are relatively the same price as a New Edge GT, but parts for these imports can be hard to get and kind of pricey. With these Mustangs, parts are so cheap and easy to get that it's scary. With the IRS (independent rear suspension) a clutch and RWD, their is no reason that this car cannot slide as stock. Yes it probably won't be very consistent, nor will it have enough angle as desired, but if you strongly stiffen the suspension in the rear and make it super tight, lower it and overall upgrade the entire suspension, by just doing upgrading the suspension and tuning it to the right specs, there is no reason this car shouldn't feel like it is on ice. Which is exactly what you want the rear to feel like. This is what I would do because of my age, and that every dollar counts, and can't afford something too expensive. Now, if I had a lot more money, I would go with my dream and choose the 04 Cobra. This car is like the american supra, and it looks absolutely amazing. Yea their are other cars that are probably easier to drift, but let's be honest. How many mustangs do you see that are set up for drifting, specifically SVT Cobra’s. There is not one thing i could dislike about this car, except maybe the interior, but who cares it would get removed anyways. Basically redo the entire suspension, stiffen the rear, upgrade the driveshaft and other components like that and you are completely ready to start sliding. This car has plenty of power stock to start, of course you can never have enough horsepower, but as a start, it has plenty, then slowly work your way into it. Because it is all about the setup. Everything has to match up and be balanced. This is why I would choose an 04 cobra as my favorite drift car because it is so iconic and it is rarely seen in the world of drifting.
Supercharger or Twin Turbo Mustang? Which is better?
The good old debate, supercharger or twin turbo? Here's my opinions on each. It really depends what your preference is and what you plan on doing with the car. Let's start off with the twin turbo. Going the twin turbo route, there are so many things to consider. It's not like a supercharger where you can just slap it on top of the motor and call it a day. So much custom fabrication and welding must come into play when going twin turbo. It all depends how you set it up and how big your turbos and piping are. If you’re running some small turbos, then not too much work is to be considered, but if you plan on running 70mm + turbos, get ready for some custom work. There are several pros and cons with twin turbos. If you go to a drag strip, it is expected to see mostly twin turbos over a supercharger on a drag car. No matter what you try and do with the supercharger, about 8/10 times, the turbos will get you so much faster. There's a reason why their are so many 8 second cars using twin turbos over a supercharger, simply because you can get more power from them. Some of the cons with going with twin turbos is that your torque and horsepower will not be instant, no matter how big your turbos are. The turbos will still have to spool and then hit boost for maximum horsepower, unlike a supercharger which is instant boost with no lag at all. Twin Turbos are typically a lot more expensive because it is a lot more work and depending on how big of turbos and boost you plan for, means stronger internals inside of your engine. Which means a lot more money being spent. If you are looking for a drag only car, then I would recommend the twin turbos as your best option.
Now let's get into my favorite, the supercharger. Nothing beats the loud screeching whine of a supercharger. There are however many pros and cons when it comes to having a supercharger. Some of the cons are that superchargers most of the time can only give you so much, they can get you very, very high horsepower and torque but if you're looking for peak horsepower, a supercharger simply can not compete with Twin Turbos. However, with a supercharger, the boost is instant. For example, let's say you have 600 horsepower SVT Cobra with a Kenne Bell supercharger vs a 900 horsepower Twin Turbo mustang. Both weighing around the same. It is very possible for the supercharged car to beat the twin turbo car off the line for some distance, but immediately when those turbos get spooling and hit boost, that car will be gone. Ideally, if you are going for a very fast drag car, and want to run far under 10’s, then your best bet is for sure Twin Turbos. However, if you're going for a very fast street car, or even a track car. The Supercharger is probably your best bet. The supercharger is instant, it's cheaper, the sound of it will give you chills and make you smile, and overall the best option for a track/street car. Typically the supercharged cars will be less Horsepower, which means that you won't need a completely built engine, obviously depending on how much boost you plan on running.
This is my take and opinions on the debate between supercharger or twin turbos. I personally will always love a supercharged car over a turbo car because the sound alone is so thrilling, and with what I want to do with the car, a supercharger is more optimal. So unless your aim is to have an unbeatable dragstrip car, then i think the supercharger is the best route.
