This year, jars of apple butter will be available outside the Visitor Center, along with specialty items from the Explore Store.
At this time, all items are available for in-person purchase only.
Apple butter isn't actually butter! It's a thick, rich spread made by slowly cooking apples with cider, sugar, and spices until the flavors deepen and caramelize. The name comes from its smooth, "buttery" texture, not from dairy.
Apple butter has been around for centuries, first made as a way to preserve apples through the winter.
Because it’s so concentrated, it has a long shelf life, making it both delicious and practical.
It can take up to eight pounds of apples to make one pound of apple butter! The exact amount can vary depending on the apples' water content, size, and how long you reduce the mixture.
Apples are Michigan's most valuable food crop, with this state being the third-largest apple-producing state in the U.S.
Bring a piece of Fenner home with you! Every purchase directly supports our mission, so when you shop, you’re not just picking up something fun—you’re helping care for the trails, habitats, and programs that make Fenner special.
