Art and architecture can empower us to rethink public space as a radical place for wonder. From years of working with inflatables as a teen, this workshop allows students to construct digital inflatable monsters that will live in a game world. In groups, students conjure objects as lively, interactive, and bold re-imaging of civic space through gaming culture. Throughout the workshop, we dive into a diverse range of inspirations, drawing from the mesmerizing visuals of Satoshi Kon’s “Paprika” parade, the groundbreaking installations at MoMA PS1 and Playlab, the rich heritage of John Hekduk’s character building, iconic character shapes of Kaws and Pixar. The innovative design methodologies of Virgil Abloh and Christo + Jeanne-Claude, Frédéric Platéus, the works of Nicole Banowetz, Artur Van Balen, and Adrien Rovero’s inflatables, and the imaginative devices of Lucy Mcrae. Students also learn cutting-edge 3D tools to model and bring their collection of Gentle Monsters to life. They will delve into form-finding methods, exploring the art of composition through intuitive improvisation, digital making, and simulations. Finally, the course will exhibit work through a virtual gameplay experience.
