MEET THE TEAM
MEET THE TEAM
Hi! I'm Nat, I am a senior, and one of the project leaders for RISE Up: Flo Forward. I have been actively involved in activism through my engagement with local congressional campaigns, and community organizations that work with immigrant youth; thus, GirlsBuild was right up my alley. I decided to lead the project because homeless women deserve to have their needs met, regardless of whether or not they can afford menstrual products and necessities. I also wanted to do something specifically for women and by women, and what better way than to do this alongside my friends/team members. Get to know them down below!
Hi! I am Angelina a senior and in my free time tend to do volunteer work with special needs children and various animals to help those who struggle with advocating for themselves and helping get their needs met as well as creating fun events for them to have a good time. Such as soccer and game night events for the children with various activities that incorporate their interests and obstacle games with the animals to ensure they also have a fun time. I chose to be part of GirlsBuild as its my passion to help anyone in need and bring advocacy and voice to those who may have limited abilities being able to help create and build things for women is so important to me as a woman myself being able to see and experience the inequality we go through daily and finding ways to limit issue and create things for these women would mean so much to me making me want to be a project manager and be part of this team.
Hi! I’m Kenzie, one of the file managers of our team. I am currently a junior in high school, and in my free time, I enjoy cooking recipes new to me & watching movies. GirlsBuild came of interest to me due to my preexisting knowledge of the inequalities women face in today’s world. With this opportunity, I wanted to somehow help bring girls together in our community, with hopes of spreading methods for building these relationships.
Hello! My name is Talia, a sophomore in John F. Kennedy’s Global Leadership and Environmental Action Magnet. I am the Videographer of the Kennedy High School Girls Build team. In my free time, I love being out in nature and exploring my surroundings as well as expressing my creativity through painting, crafting, and crocheting. I am passionate about advocating for the environment and lifting the voices of those who may be too scared to act themselves. I decided to help with the Girl’s Build grant because I wanted to make a lasting impact in my community. By addressing the pressing issue of menstrual inequalities and helping break down the stigma surrounding this completely natural process, I can incorporate my love for helping others and my hope for a sustainable future. Through my role as our project’s videographer, I hope to encapsulate the mission and impact of our advocacy work in engaging videos for others to watch and learn from.
Hi my name is Audrina Quiroz. I am currently a Junior at John F Kennedy highschool and enrolled in Global Leadership and Environmental Action Magnet. I am participating in the girl build team as a web designer. Getting involved in school programs, sports and clubs is something that is very important to me. Which led to me joining the cheer team, Yearbook, Gleam Rise council and of course girls build. Making a change in the community is something I have a passion for. While in girls' build i hope to make a difference and/or help women across the valley.
Hello! My name is Serena Soliz and I am a current junior in John F. Kennedy High School's Global Leadership and Environmental Action Magnet. Within our Girl’s Build team, I will be working as one of the web designers. When I am not participating in extracurricular activities, I enjoy spending time with my friends and grounding myself in nature. Through the experiences I have had, I’ve discovered my passion for helping all aspects of the world. Whether it’s social or environmental issues, it brings me consolation that even my small actions can make the slightest difference. Hence, I intend to do the utmost to advocate for women and their inequalities throughout the entirety of this project.
Hi! My name is Carolina Pozos and I am currently a sophomore at John F. Kennedy High School in the Global Leadership Environmental Action Magnet. I will be helping our Girl’s Build team by taking pictures of events to capture our hard work and education throughout meetings and events. Through my experiences throughout my life, I have found a need to help women in my community. I joined Girl’s Build because I think it is important to help and uplift women in our community and outside our community. Women are often looked-over and I think it is important to bring awareness to this by giving women a safe space to express themselves in.
What went well:
We achieved the amount of donations and care kits that we hoped for. Our homeroom runs and placement of flyers throughout the school did prove to be successful. We budgeted our money perfectly, and we even had leftover money to buy toothbrush covers. We got all the supplies we needed to make of quality reuseable menstrual pads.
Areas of improvement:
We deviated completely away from the making of the menstrual pads, and while this was in response to what community organizations stated that they wanted, we had enough people to distribute proper attention to both projects; thus, in the future, properly prioritizing is essential. We were not as active on our Instagram as we had hoped, but we did not discuss as a whole team what was expected of our Instagram account. Delegation was also somewhat of an issue, as many team members were tasked with other activities for leadership; thus, there were only a few people who had the time to create the care kits; thus, communication and shared responsibilities are areas of improvement. Additionally, we would have liked to communicate with the women's shelters directly, instead of an organization that had many shelters under its jurisdiction.
Overall:
Overall, we are grateful to have had this opportunity to be a part of something bigger than ourselves and feel empowered to work with women to make something for women. This was an amazing experience and learning opportunity for our future endeavors. Yay, RISE Up: Flo Forward!!!
