Coaching Staff

Head Coach: Jake Schauer

Coach Schauer is entering his third season at the Head Coach for the GFC Knights. Schauer is a native of Williston, ND. He played football and graduated from Valley City State University with a B.S. in Physical Education and Elementary Education, where he was a four-year letter winner and Team Captain in 2013. 

Upon graduation, Coach Schauer spent five years teaching and coaching in Park River, ND.  In Park River, Schauer was fortunate enough to coach five state champion winning teams (Football x2, Baseball x3). After Park River, Schauer was named the Head Football Coach in Thompson, ND. Schauer was an assistant coach for the 11-man East Shrine team in 2016. 

Jake is currently a Physical Education Teacher at Kelly Elementary. His wife, Alyssa, is a Financial Advisor for Edward Jones in Grand Forks. Together, they have two daughters and a son: Jordy (6), Lennyn (2), and Jett (0).

Defensive Coordinator: Len Philpot

Coach Philpot is a Grand Forks Central graduate (1995).  He went on to play football at Mayville State University, where he earned his degree in Physical Education and minored in Coaching and Business Education.  

Len started coaching for Central in the fall of 1999.  Some of Coach Philpot's favorite memories as a coach and player are:  walking out onto Cushman Field on a Friday Night, being part of the 2005 State Championship team, and watching my kids grow up around and in a wonderful program that teaches young boys to be men of character. 

His wife, Heidi, is a physician at the Altru Family Medicine Residency clinic.  They have three children: Kacy Jo (GFC '20 Grad), Bryce (GFC '23 Grad) and Brock (future GFC '29 Grad).

Offensive Coordinator: Brandon Bartsch

Coach Bartsch is entering his 18th season as an assistant football coach at Grand Forks Central.  He is a native of Minot, ND and a graduate from Bishop Ryan High School.  After high school, Brandon earned his bachelor’s degree in Biology Secondary Education from Valley City State University in 2006. While attending VCSU, he played football as an offensive lineman for four years and was a student assistant coach for 1 year.

His favorite memories include winning State Titles his freshman and junior year of high school (1997, 1999), winning the DAC Conference in 2005, beating Red River in the Cushman Classic and helping GFC return to the State Title game in 2023.  

Brandon is currently a science teacher at Grand Forks Central.  His wife, Amy, is currently the Chief Academic Officer for the Grand Forks Public Schools.  They have two children: Paxton (10) and Paisley (7). 

Special Teams Coordinator/Co-Defensive Coordinator: Stetson Carr

Stetson Carr is entering his 6th season on staff and as the Special Teams Coordinator with GFC. A Hazen, ND native, Carr played football as a wide receiver/place holder at the University Of North Dakota, where he earned his B.S. in Kinesiology and Physical Education. He now teaches Physical Education at Grand Forks Central and serves as the weight room Strength & Conditioning Coordinator. 

Some of his favorite football memories include winning a State Title his senior season of high school (2012), winning the Big Sky Championship his junior season at UND (2016), and helping GFC return to the State Title game in 2023.

Assistant Coach: Trevor Lennon

Coach Lennon is a Grand Forks Central graduate (2009). Trevor went on to play college football at the University of Mary in Bismarck, ND, where he played tight end. Trevor is a Tight Ends and Defensive Tackle coach. Coach Lennon is in his 11th year of coaching for Grand Forks Central Football. His favorite memory as a coach is multiple Cushman Classic wins and making it to the Dakota Bowl. Trevor is a Business Education teacher at Central. Coach Lennon and his wife, Melissa, have two daughters Olivia (7) and Ella (2).

Assistant Coach: Darin King

Coach King, a Valley City native, has been coaching football for 35 years. His coaching career involves stops at VCSU, UND, Minot High School, GFRR, Thompson High School, and now GFC. In addition to coaching, Coach King is the GFPS Technology Director. 

Assistant Coach: Garrett Litzinger

Coach Litzinger is a Grand Forks Central Graduate (2014) and is in his eighth year of coaching. Coach Litzinger also is the Head Coach for the Grand Forks Central Wrestling Team. Litzinger attended both Northland Community & Technical College and the University of North Dakota where he obtained an AA degree in Liberal Arts and an Education degree with an emphasis in social studies. He is an eighth grade social studies teacher at Valley Middle School. His favorite memories on the field include winning four Cushman Classics and being able to coach his little brother. 

Assistant Coach: Joe Drumm

Coach Drumm grew up in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin where he played football for 9 years. After college, he coached football and wrestling at Williston High School for three years. From there, Coach Drumm moved to Grand Forks to begin teaching and coaching at Grand Forks Central.  Coach Drumm has been coaching at Grand Forks Central for 6 years, working as Freshman HC, OC, DC and coaching most position groups. Drumm currently works with the Offensive Line and Linebackers.

Freshman Coach: Matt Fischer

Matt Fischer graduated from Grand Forks Central High School and played football all 4 years in the late 90’s as a linebacker and quarterback for the Knights. After graduating in 1999, Matt went on to throw the javelin at North Dakota State University. Finishing his education at NDSU in 2005 with a M.S. in Communication, Matt moved back to Grand Forks where he married his high school sweetheart, Abbie (Gibbs). 


In addition to football, Fischer is also a throws coach for the GFC and RR track and field teams. Matt currently serves as Co-Founder and CEO at Probitas Promotions. He and Abbie are raising their 5 children - Lucas, Eli, Asher, Mattie and Finn.

Freshman Coach: Brady Terrill

Coach Terrill is a graduate of Grand Forks Central (2017) and is in his fifth season coaching football at GFC. Terrill was a three-year starter on the offensive and defensive line, team captain and all-conference player his senior year.

Terrill started coaching football and wrestling at Twining Middle School between 2017-2019 while working for his B.B.A. in Marketing at the University of North Dakota. Terrill also spent five years as an assistant coach for the GFC boys wrestling team and became the first GFC girls wrestling head coach in 2021 and now is a co-head coach for the Grand Forks KnightRiders girls wrestling team.

Terrill works as a Graphic Designer for Custom Stripes Inc.
