What is AVID Secondary?
AVID Secondary equips teachers and schools with what they need to help these students succeed on a path to college and career success. The power of AVID Secondary is the ability to impact students in the AVID Elective class and all students throughout the campus. Grounded in the belief that a growth mindset can be taught, AVID Secondary has an effect on the entire school by providing classroom activities, teaching practices, and academic behaviors that can be incorporated into any classroom to improve engagement and success for all students. AVID emphasizes rigor with support, WICOR (writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading), high expectations, and a college/career readiness culture for student success.
Components of AVID Secondary
During each stage of learning, AVID Secondary incorporates:

Organizational Skills – both mental and physical; students are given organizational tools, as well as time management, goal-setting, and note-taking strategies.
WICOR-Infused Lessons – emphasize instruction on writing to learn, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading to learn in all content areas.
Partnerships – among students, classrooms, grade levels, schools, feeder patterns, families and communities.
AVID Elective – This class is made available to students in grades 7-10 for the 2024-25 school year.

The AVID Elective is an academic elective course that prepares students for readiness and success beyond the AVID classroom. The class is scheduled during the regular school day as a year-long course. Each week, students receive instruction utilizing a rigorous college preparatory curriculum provided by AVID Center, tutor-facilitated study groups, motivational activities, and academic success skills. In AVID, students participate in activities that incorporate strategies focused on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading to support their academic growth. Throughout the school year, students also take several field trips to various colleges and universities in the region to expose them to possible next steps in their education.
