Class Policies

Tools for Success

Students must be prepared for class with the following materials:

  • charged iPad and earbuds/headphones

  • Science Workbook

  • Science Notebook

  • Student Planner

  • A pencil or pen

  • Science Folder or Science Section in binder

Grading Policy

Students' overall grade is based on three categories:

  • 40% - Practice: this includes in-class work, homework, lab activities, and minor projects

  • 50% - Assessment: this includes major projects, quizzes, and tests

  • 10% - Participation: this includes answering the Question of the Day and attending Zoom sessions regularly

Extra credit opportunities will occassionally be made available but students should not rely on extra credit to make up for lack of effort or preparation in the the Practice and Assessment categories.

Extra Help during Distance Learning

My Virtual Office Hours are twice a day: 8:00am - 8:30am & 3:00pm - 3:30pm

During office hours, students can contact me via email. Arrangements can be made ahead of time if a student needs to meet on Zoom.

Absences and Make-up Work

Students should check Google Classroom daily! Students who are absent can avoid falling behind by logging in to Google Classroom. If necessary, students may get an extension on an assignment for excused absences. Generally, students are entitled an additional day for each day they are out but it is highly recommended that they try to not fall behind. I encourage students to try to use the resources provided on Google Classroom to stay caught up.

Late Assignments

  • Late assignments will still be accepted up to one week past the due date. However, points will be deducted from late work. Extenuating circumstances will considered on a case to case basis.

  • Any assessments that are missed will be scored as a "0" until the assessment has been made up. Missed quizzes and tests must be made up prior to the end of the grading period.

Classroom Rules - Be SMART!

  • Stay on Task

  • Make Safe Choices

  • Act Appropriately

  • Respect Everyone

  • Take Care of the Classroom Environment

*** More specific examples of SMART behavior will be shared in class.

Snack Guidelines

  • Drinks - Students may have a resealable water bottle with them at their desks. Students may not share their water bottles with other students. However, during lab activities, water bottles must be put away to avoid contamination.

  • Food - Students may not eat food in class during classtime. Students who come in during lunch time, before, or after school may eat while they are working. Foods containing peanuts and peanut butter are NOT ALLOWED in class at all.

Dismissal Routine

Students will remain seated until they are excused.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Our school holds walk-in Parent-Teacher Conferences twice a year in the gym. Please see the school calendar for specific dates. In addition to those dates, I am available by appointment for in-person or phone conferences.

Allergy Alert!!!

Mr. Barcelona is highly allergic and sensitive to many fragrances. Please refrain from using/spraying perfume, cologne, body spray, spray deodorant, scented lotion, and hand sanitizer inside the classroom. Students may raise their hands to be excused to step outside to apply hand sanitizer.
