Class Overview
7th & 8th grade students will demonstrate proficiency of the Common Core standards by analyzing texts. Students will make claims, use text evidence, and explain the meaning of texts in their responses.
Students will learn the structure of a paragraph:
Students will learn to restate the question into a claim.
Students will learn to write a transition sentence that will inform the audience what the paragraph is about as well connect the claim with cited text evidence.
Students will use evidence from the text (in quotation marks) to support their claim.
Students will then explain how the cited text evidence supports the claim. Key words and phrases will be chosen to show understanding of the cited text.
And finally students will restate the claim using synonymous academic language (summary sentence).
Students will learn the meaning of new Greek, Latin, and Anglo Saxon vocabulary. Students will practice writing synonym and antonyms for new words. Students will
Students will improve their ability to plan, revise, edit, and publish argumentative, informative, and narrative writing pieces.
Students will work together to express and listen carefully to ideas, integrate information, and use media to develop critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity.

Welcome! I am Mr. Clemente your ELA 7 & 8 teacher in room 208. I have been teaching junior high in the Fullerton Elementary School District for 29 years. This will be year 30 for me. I earned a bachelor's degree in English Literature from UC Irvine and a master's degree in Composition and Rhetoric from Cal Poly Pomona. I enjoy contact sports, home cooked meals, teaching ELA, and hanging out with my dog Mozzie.
