Hello, everyone! My name is Elizabeth Putan Salloman, though you can call me Teach Beth. I am from Bagong Silang, Caloocan City, Philippines.
I arrived in Taiwan on December 23, 2023, and began my journey at Changhua Arts High School (CHAHS) on December 25. Being away from my family for the first time, especially during Christmas, was a challenging experience, as many Filipinos can relate. However, the warm welcome from my colleagues and the beautiful school environment helped ease the homesickness I felt.
Prior to coming to Taiwan, I spent almost ten years as a public school teacher with the Department of Education in Caloocan City. Additionally, I have more than nine years of experience in the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry, where I worked with American and Canadian clients. This experience significantly honed my English communication skills, which ultimately helped me transition into teaching English here in Taiwan. I also taught as a computer instructor for two years in private schools in the Philippines after college.
The pandemic provided an opportunity for me to pursue a Master in Business Administration (MBA) degree. Although I was unable to complete the program's final semester due to my decision to teach abroad, I still hope to continue my studies here in Taiwan, given the opportunity. I graduated from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines with a bachelor's degree in Business Teacher Education. I also hold an associate's degree in Computer Science, which likely played a significant role in my appointment as a computer teacher in the schools to which I applied.
For many years, the educational system in the Philippines served as my comfort zone. However, as the saying goes, true growth happens outside our comfort zones. As a foreign English teacher at Changhua Arts High School (CHASH), I am embracing the challenges of adapting to new experiences, environments, and educational systems. I aspire to contribute to the success of Taiwan's Bilingual 2030 Policy by teaching English to the students at Changhua Arts HS. Teaching is a gift from God, and I believe it is meant to be used effectively.
