Even if only a few students are laughing, the rest will pay attention.
I always encourage students to ask questions and take initiative to learn
跨文化對話
As a foreigner, I'm not just an English teacher, I'm also an ambassador for my culture.
One of the easiest and most effective ways to get students (especially younger ones) interested in a new topic.
For one of my Junior High levels, I use a clip from the popular U.S. show "Brooklyn 99". I use this in the lesson plan for "At the Police Station" to teach relatively advanced words such as "lineup", "interrogate", "detective", as well as reinforcing sentence structures in a non-textbook situation.
This not only teaches new vocabulary, but also helps in bridging a cultural gap with a new song in a funny situation!
I have them not only draw and label animals that live in a grassland, but which animals live in which grasslands. For example, in the American Prairie, they can draw prairie dogs, bison, and coyotes, but not lions, giraffes, or elephants, because they live in a different grassland!
The 7th Graders get to "write a letter" to Santa, where they write about how they've been good, where they live, and what they want for Christmas. It gives them a chance to learn new words about everyday items, the ones they're the most interested in!
In 8th Grade, the students will learn about travel vocabulary, and will draw and label things they will bring on a vacation, and what souveniers they will bring back. If they go to Thailand, they will bring sandals and sunscreen, but if they go to Iceland they will bring thick socks and a big jacket!
