My name is Jessica Nasr and I will be your instructor for Math 201 - Elementary Statistics. Please take 2-minutes to view my video and learn a little about me before you explore the rest of this page to prepare you for week one.

Through the successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
Apply quantitative problem-solving skills to biological problems and issues.
Select, apply, and interpret descriptive statistics in an appropriate fashion.
Select, apply and interpret hypothesis testing methods in an appropriate fashion.
Reason both inductively and deductively with quantitative information and data. Use statistical software for complex statistical analysis of real-world and simulated data.
Write the results of a statistical study and draw conclusion in reports.
How and when to attend our first week.
Our course is housed within Canvas, and you'll find all of our course content there. The login link to the course is found at the bottom of this page.
First day of instruction is Tuesday August 24.
You have the option to log in as early as Saturday August 21.
How this course works.
Usually, you can log into our class on your own schedule, without required meeting times.
This 15-Week course is organized into Modules.
There will also be 3 in-person exams at the end of Module 3, Module 6, and Module 9 (date and time TBA when you log in)
There will also be a final in-person exam on December 7.
General availability and structure.
Weekly Modules will open and become available to you in Canvas on Sunday at 12:00 AM.
Every week on Sunday you will receive an email with the Weekly Learning Plan which is part of the Announcement and Module overview as well. The learning plan is very detailed and will highlight:

This class is a caring community. I just wanted to remind you that that wearing your mask over your nose and mouth is required throughout the duration of the class period, and if unvaccinated, you are required to be tested weekly in order to attend class. CSUCI is following guidelines from the California Department of Public Health and Ventura County Department of Public Health to promote safety during the COVID-19 pandemic for CSUCI students, employees, and visitors on the campus, to help prevent and protect oneself and others from the spread of the virus. Students are required to adhere to all health and safety requirements outlined on the University’s website regarding COVID-19. As your professor, I will be actively present in your math learning experience.
I will provide clear, concise, free content and practice material that helps you learn. Whenever you let me know I'm falling short of this goal, I'll try different ways to explain better right away.
I will answer your math questions within 24 hours, and I will provide feedback on your assignments and exams within one week.
I will show respect for your individual learning style, experiences, and needs, and I will create a positive and supportive environment where you will feel safe to experiment, ask questions, and take on challenging material.
I work diligently to keep course costs to a minimum. Your textbook is free and available to be accessed in multiple forms to better meet your need.
As an educator, I understand that you are busy and that you have many competing priorities. When needed, I will be flexible to support your successful completion of this course.
You will log into our course each week no later than Monday evening to evaluate the work and due dates in the current module.
You will establish a weekly study routine (expect about 9 hours per week) that allows you to complete all assignments and prepare for the exams.
You will be brave and challenge yourself to lean into discomfort. This is the space where growth occurs. You will focus on understanding the concepts and performing the skills of this course, aiming for your own personal best.
When you have a math question, you will turn to your peers, to me (your instructor), our embedded peer tutor, and to the free online and on-campus tutoring. You will sample a variety of outreach strategies early in the term, so you can identify and use your best strategies for getting help.
You will uphold academic integrity by submitting only work that you understand for yourself. At exam time, you will join me to demonstrate your own achievements in person.
You will be thoughtful in your interactions with peers, while taking extra care to respect diverse perspectives. You will support your classmates as you share this learning space and time.

Expected response time.
If you contact me Monday-Friday, I will generally respond within 24 hours. If you do not hear back from me in two days M-F, please message me again. I will get back to you! I do my best to reply on weekends but I'm human too and have been known to take breaks.

This week you will start with Module 0 - Getting Started to introduce you to the course policies and format. You will have a chance to introduce yourself to me and to your classmates as well. Remember you are not alone we are all here to support each other. If have any general question and you want the answer for it you can post it in the Q&A Discussion: Have A General Course Question? Post it here! One of your classmates or I will respond to it.

Access to the Textbook in any format you like - Statistics from OpenStax, ISBN 1-947172-05-0.
Begin planning now for private, uninterrupted time in your schedule to complete the assignments – preferably in at least one-hour blocks and at least three times a week. It can be easy to fall behind!
Use Chrome as your browser. Canvas works best on Chrome and so do various other technologies you'll be using in our course. We recommend you download Chrome now if you don't have it installed already.
Log in to our course each Monday to orient yourself to the new module. Take notes of the assignments and their due dates. Mark them on your digital calendar to help track them.
Check your email and Inbox Conversations regularly.
Set notifications to alert you of announcements.
Use the conversations feature (click Inbox on the global navigation) for private messages to the instructor and other students. The discussion forum is for public messages.
If you feel confused about an assignment, take a breath and review the instructions one more time. Sometimes you may miss something the first time.
If something isn't working or you just can't figure something out, post a message in our general course question Q&A Discussion, so we can support each other! We know technology can be frustrating at times so step away if you feel tension rising. :)
