Logos once communicated wealth and status openly, but they’ve become synonymous with conspicuous consumption. According to an article by Ling Jiang, Annie Peng Cui, and Juan Shan, "This is because many luxury brands adopt a “masstige luxury” strategy, which makes luxury products more attainable by the general public than ever before. "(Jiang et al.) In understanding the use of this strategy, it is also an appeal to pathos and it is fathomable how many consumers would be attracted to higher-end brands believing that luxury isn't as out of reach as it may seem.

The rise of unbranded but recognizable pieces among the wealthy reflects a shift toward subtlety and exclusivity in luxury fashion. These items are not marked by overt logos or branding but are distinguished by their superior craftsmanship, unique materials, and design details that only the discerning eye can recognize. For example, a perfectly tailored coat from Loro Piana or a leather tote from The Row communicates sophistication without a single visible logo.
This trend aligns with a growing preference for "insider" status symbols—pieces that signal wealth and taste to those who are familiar with their value, rather than loudly proclaiming it to the masses.
As stated in the same article by Jiang, Cui, and Shan, "Thus, in order to regain exclusivity and superiority, elite consumers now turn to quiet luxury that features subtle but distinctive styles (Eckhardt et al., 2015)." (Jiang et al.)
These garments often come with an air of mystery, as their quality and craftsmanship speak louder than any label. The appeal lies in exclusivity; owning these items creates a sense of belonging within a refined, understated community of like-minded individuals who prioritize elegance and substance over overt displays of status.
