Finding Main Idea and Theme Within a Literature Text

4th Grade English Language Arts

Learning Target: Students will be able to determine the main idea of a literary text, using the skills that they have already acquired working with informational texts.

Standards:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.4.2

Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text; summarize the text.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.4.3

Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.

CC.4.R.L.1

Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.

Formative Assessments: Students will be informally assessed at each point in the Reading block.

Vocabulary:

Main idea - What the author has to say about a topic

Theme - The subject or idea of a piece of writing

Literary text - A text that tells a narrative; derived from a piece of literature

For each part of this lesson, I had a series of slides that I would use to guide the structure of the lesson and smooth out transitions.

Part one: reading lesson

How can I find main idea and theme in a literature text?

Modeling

To begin, I read a passage to the students and then created a graphic organizer with the main idea and details from the text.

Guided Practice

Once I had modeled the process of finding this information, I had the students read the next passage with their table partner and fill out the next organizer together.

Independent Practice

After working together, the students were given time to read the last passage on their own and complete the third graphic organizer independently.

Part Two: Phonics Practice

Revisiting essential skills and techniques.

Phonics:

During this time, we went through Activities A-C on our Rewards worksheet, where we emphasized practice on vowel sounds.

Part Three: guided reading & centers

At this time, the students were divided into four groups and alternated between silent reading, listening to books on Epic! Books, and being pulled into guided reading groups.

Guided reading:

In our guided reading groups, I led the students through a reading about the Earth's surface that went along with our "Earth's Surfaces" science unit. After reading together, we walked through comprehension questions and discussed what information we had learned.
