Income - The families featured on GapMinder’s Dollar Street resource live on between 74 and 3,268 U.S. dollars (USD) per month. The higher figure is a significant outlier, seeing as the next closest number is 461 USD per month.
Housing - Many of the poorest individuals on GapMinder experience unjust and unsafe living conditions. They are often struggling to provide for their families in a physical way, limited by resources and economic capital.
Local Population and Income Gap - In comparison, U.S.-American families featured on GapMinder range from 604 to 5,125 USD per month. However, expatriates come from countries other than the U.S. and will not necessarily fall within this range. It is safe to assume that the data on American families is suitable for our purposes considering that the population we are dealing with is able to afford overseas travel.
Agriculture - Our NGO Amani’s Field seeks to impact populations from varying socioeconomic backgrounds by building peace and stronger institutions (Sustainable Development Goal #16) between Kenyan nationals and expatriates; however, the agricultural component is intended as an empowerment initiative in cooperation with local, working poor communities.
There is great potential for equitable collaboration in kenya with immigrants and locals.
Kenya’s humanitarian, missions, and international development sectors are facing a training problem. There is a lack of cooperation and understanding between nationals and expatriates. Because colonialism continues to be prevalent in this particular region, facilitating collaboration on a smaller scale and training up peaceable leaders will begin to contribute to the larger problem.
Our theory of change focuses on the simultaneous and cumulative transformation of hands, hearts, and minds:
Hands
facilitated on a working farm
communal table for meals
physical shared labor and tangible partnerships
economic and social integration in local community
Hearts
creation of new relationships
peacebuilding workshops
devotional retreats
Minds
leadership training and retreats
decolonial education
shared facilitation for new perspectives/pedagogies
Our NGO aims to include every individual, regardless of race or ethnic background. We want to truly reflect the body of Christ, providing holistic care and well-being, both spiritually and physically, for a diversity of people.
Kenya is predominantly Protestant Christian, so we want to lean into the demographic and ask, why is there such separation?
