Important note about Registration for ALL students for the 22-23 school year
2022/2023 Re-Registration Begins for Returning Students
As you may know, every spring we ask families to confirm and update their child's information for the upcoming school year. This re-registration process helps to make sure we have up-to-date contact and medical information for our students. Believe it or not, it is time for you to re-register your student(s) for the 2022-23 school year!
On Tuesday May 17th, you will receive an email from the email address info@my.westcler.org that has the subject "West Clermont: Urgent Timely Action Needed!" It is important that you complete the re-registration process as soon as possible since we will be sending information over the summer about the 2022-23 school year. In addition, by updating your student’s information now, it will guarantee that you will receive your student’s homeroom teacher, middle school team/den and/or your student’s high school schedule on the earliest possible date.
A parent/caregiver help session is scheduled for May 19th from 5 pm - 8pm at West Clermont High School.
Once you receive the email mentioned above, please complete the re-registration process as soon as possible!
School Fees
A reminder that all school fees need to be paid by the end of the school year. Please contact Jodi Thorpe with any questions at thorpe_j@my.westcler.org.

CommunityShare
Did you know that West Clermont is a part of the CommunityShare network? CommunityShare connects community members with classrooms, helping create authentic and relevant learning opportunities students.
It’s important that your child is engaged at school and prepared for the future. We believe one of the best ways to make this happen is to offer community-connected learning experiences in the classroom.
CommunityShare is an online platform that invites trusted partners to create a profile which includes the experiences, skills, and passions they could share with students. CommunityShare functions like a ‘human library’ and matches partners with teachers who have made community-connected learning requests.
Do you have experience in a job or industry students might be curious about? Do you have an artistic or athletic talent you could share? Do you speak multiple languages? Have you served as an elected official or in the military? Have you traveled to places students might be learning about?
CommunityShare allows you to support students in many different ways. For example, you might serve as a guest speaker or a project collaborator at your child’s school–or even at a school your child will attend in the future. You might find your experience doesn’t fit with what your child is learning this year, but that it’s a perfect fit for students in a different grade level or subject. This is a great way to get to know different teachers and to learn more about our schools.
Even an hour of your time makes a huge difference. We hope you’ll become a part of West Clermont’s human library by creating a CommunityShare profile. It's a very simple process - just click the "sign up" and then enter your email to get started.

8th Grade SOS
8th Grade Students will be participating in the SOS: Signs of Suicide Prevention Program on Tuesday, November 30th for Den A (Teams 1, 2 and 3) and Thursday, December 2nd for Den B (Teams 4, 5, and 6) of this school year. School Counselors in partnership with Child Focus will be teaching students about mental health and how to seek help if they are worried about themselves or a friend. SOS has been used in thousands of schools over the last decade. Studies have shown that this program is successful at increasing help seeking by students concerned about themselves or a friend and has shown a reduction in suicide attempts. Students will watch age-appropriate video clips and participate in a guided discussion about depression, suicide, and what to do if they are concerned about a friend. Following the video, students will complete a brief depression screening tool. This tool cannot provide a diagnosis of depression but does indicate whether a young person should be referred for evaluation by a mental health professional. We encourage you to visit www.sossignsofsuicide.org/parent for information on warning signs for youth suicide, useful resources, and some of the key messages students will learn. If you DO NOT want your student to participate in the SOS program, please complete the form that was sent home with your student or use this link to access the form. All forms must be turned into the student services office by Friday, November 19th - only if you DO NOT want your student to participate. If you have any questions please contact Student Services at 513-947-7419.

Good morning. If your child is being quarantined due to exposure to someone else who has tested positive for Covid-19, Clermont County Public Health (CCPH) is emailing you with the return date to come back to school. The CCPH is noting that most of the emails they send to families with quarantine dates are bouncing back to them. This means that parents are not opening those emails. As these emails are encrypted with personal health information, parents have to log in to a secure site to access them. As such, some may be ignoring those emails as spam. Please make sure that you check your email for this email from the CCPH.
Here is an example of the emails that you would receive: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1zAp827l8_87KipthBJRwkNp2U1IHcY98/view?usp=sharing

Updated Close Contact - Quarantine Information
Please make sure that you are following the West Clermont Stop the Spread Protocols including taking your student's temperature every day before school and keep them at home if they have any symptoms.
Please make sure that you check your inbox for this email from the CCPH.

Recess
6th graders have lunch and recess for 35 minutes every day. During this time, we offer recess time outside as frequently as we can. Recently, we have seen an increase in inappropriate behavior which makes it more challenging to monitor students to ensure their safety while outdoors. As a result, we shared with students this week that we are adjusting the recess schedule for the near future. Students will go outside every other day for recess so we can more closely monitor behavior.
**The middle school is seeking to fill lunch monitor positions. If you or someone you know is interested, please let us know. Additional support makes it easier to monitor student behavior and allow students more outdoor recess time.**
WCMS School Counselor Announcements
Recently our sixth grade students took a needs assessment that will provide the school counselors with information to guide them in providing classroom lessons, small groups and individual counseling for students based on their specific personal/social and school concerns. We would also like YOUR feedback on the topics that you feel it would be important for the school counselors to address with students. Please take a moment and submit your thoughts using this google form. Thank you!
S.O.S. (Signs of Suicide) Prevention Program
West Clermont Middle School is partnering with Child Focus, Inc. to bring a mental health education and screening program to our students. The purpose of the program is to try to find the best way to help the students in this school who may be experiencing symptoms of depression or even having suicidal thoughts. Often, young people don’t like to ask for help because they are embarrassed or don’t know whom to ask. This prevention program is designed to make it easier for young people to find help for any emotional or behavioral health concerns that trouble them. Identifying these issues early will allow us to provide the appropriate support in the most efficient and beneficial manner possible.
To proactively address this issue, we are offering depression screening and suicide prevention training as part of the SOS: Signs of Suicide Prevention Program. This program has been used by thousands of schools over the last decade. It has proven successful at increasing help seeking by students concerned about themselves or a friend and is the only school-based suicide prevention program to show a reduction in suicide attempts in a randomized, controlled study (American Journal of Public Health, March, 2004). Our 6th grade students will be participating in this program on Tuesday, October 12th and Thursday, October 14th of this school year.
Our goals in participating in this program are straightforward:
● To help our students understand that depression is a treatable illness, and help them assess whether or not they may have symptoms consistent with depression,
● To explain that suicide is a preventable tragedy that often occurs as a result of untreated depression,
● To provide students training in how to identify serious depression and potential suicidality in a friend, and,
● To impress upon students that they can help themselves or a friend by taking the simple step of talking to a responsible adult about their concerns.
How will my child’s information be protected?
● Protecting student information is a primary concern.
● The screening process will take place during school hours; however, no information will be entered into student school records, and will not be shared with anyone except the parent/guardian, your child, your school counselor, and trained professionals from Child Focus, Inc. and/or the Clermont County Crisis Response Team.

Remind.com Information for Families
West Clermont uses a text messaging service called Remind to communicate with families when a student is absent from school and we have not received a communication from caregivers about the absence. These messages are sent to families within two hours of the school day.
Another aspect of Remind is that it is an optional communication tool for the West Clermont classroom teacher.
On Monday, September 13, 2021 and beyond, you may receive a message from Remind with the following information via email and by text (if you already have an account) that looks like this. Once you have claimed your account, you can control the messages you receive by following these instructions: Change Your Notification Preferences
For more information about Remind, visit remind.com/families.
Schoology Information
For Families that Had Schoology Parent Accounts Last Year
Schoology has confirmed an issue on their end that caused many parent accounts to become "unlinked" from their students in Schoology. If you had a parent Schoology account last school year and you are no longer able to see your student's information, please complete this form to have your account fixed: https://forms.gle/87zSWsWPvaiKTYX87.
Also, if you had a student in West Clermont last year but did NOT have a parent Schoology account but now you want one, you can also complete this same form.
For Families with Students that are New to WC
Schoology is the name of our learning management system that students and teachers use to access educational materials, resources, and assignments. Students receive their Schoology login information from their classroom teachers. Parents and guardians can also create separate parent accounts on Schoology so that you can view their activities, assignments, and assignment grades. Next week, we will begin sending families that have students that are new to West Clermont this school year their parent access codes so they can create their parent Schoology accounts. You DO NOT need to complete the form above if your student is new to WC this school year. We will send your access code to the email address you used when you enrolled your child at West Clermont.
West Clermont Citizens Advisory Commission
Are you interested in making a lasting impact on the West Clermont School District? Apply for the Citizens Advisory Commission! The Commission is made up of a minimum of 12 volunteer parents, community members, and educators who conduct research on school-board identified priorities. This year, the Commission will research the feasibility of changing the middle school start time. The only requirement for serving is that you live or work full-time in the district. Members are appointed by the Board of Education and serve for a two-year term. Commission meetings are held on a monthly basis. West Clermont is accepting applications through Wednesday, September 15, 2021. Click here to apply.
Additional Benefits for Families that Qualify
Based on a waiver from the USDA, we are able to provide all children in our district with breakfast and lunch at no charge for the 2021-22 school year. All students can receive these free meals. There is no application needed to participate. (Students will also have the ability to purchase additional à la carte items or snacks from the cafeteria).
However, part of the way West Clermont receives its funding from both the state and the federal government is related to the income levels of its students' families. In addition, our families can qualify and/or request additional benefits based on their household income. These benefits could include things such as waiving your child's general school fees, having access to free or low-cost internet in your home, and receiving money from the state to provide food for your child(ren) on the weekend and during the summer. In order to receive the state and federal funding that our students deserve, we are asking all families to please complete the form below. (Any information you submit is confidential and will not be shared with anyone outside West Clermont.) Please complete this form: https://forms.gle/P87TVb17X4yA6T5u6

Good evening. I wanted to point out that due to a printing issue, we have rescheduled fall picture retakes to Wednesday, October 20, 2021. A quick reminder that there is no school on Friday, October 8, 2021 and Monday, October 11, 2021. Teachers and staff will be engaging in professional development during those days. Important Note
Recently, the Ohio School Safety Center (OSSC) has learned of a new October social media challenge that impacts Ohio schools and, specifically, staff and educators.
Some TikTok users have devised a monthly list that includes various pranks or “challenges” to take place at school. For example, in recent weeks, there have been incidents of school vandalism as part of the "devious lick" challenge.
The published challenge for the month of October asks students to “Slap a Teacher.” The challenge encourages students to slap a teacher or staff member and run before being caught committing the assault. The incident must also be filmed or the challenge does not “count” (ODE, Situational Awareness Bulletin).
It’s important for students to understand that this behavior will not be tolerated and can result in consequences. Please discuss this with your child as we want to be proactive in how we approach situational awareness. It’s important that we encourage positive decision-making and following school expectations as a priority when it comes to the safety and well-being of our students and staff.
Picture Retakes
Due to a printing issue, fall picture retakes have been rescheduled to Wednesday, Oct 20, 2021.

6th Grade Families:
For some reason the calendar page turn to October seems like a breath of fresh air to me. Our family loves fall days with pumpkin patches, long days outdoors, sports (in person and on t.v.) and cool nights that we cozy up by the fire. We've also already experienced a quick virus that our youngest already brought home from preschool; so we know - like many of you - that cooler days may also mean sniffles and colds. Still by October, many of our students have started to settle in to routine. They know the school expectations, they've started making friends, and hopefully, they're sharing some of their learning experiences with you.
We’ve spent time the first several weeks getting you to know your child and what they need to be the best versions of themselves as learners and near teenagers. Part of this journey is U+time at the beginning of the day. We have designed the first hour of the day to build meaningful connections within our students through Caring Schools Community and engage in learning that is designed to support each child's learning needs. This could look like reading intervention, additional math support, books clubs, STEM projects, advanced math instruction, etc. THIS MONDAY, students will meet with their U+Time teacher for the first time. You will also receive an email this week describing your child's experience during U+Time. As always, please reach out if you have any questions.
Finally, we are looking forward to our 6th Grade Family Night on Thursday, October 21, 2021. You will receive an email on Thursday, October 7 with detailed information regarding the event and how you can sign up. If you have immediate concerns or questions about your child’s progress, please reach out to your child’s teacher.
We feel so fortunate that you trust us to grow alongside your child this year. Thank you for everything you do to help us support your child every day in every way we can.
Have a great weekend!
Tiffany Brennan

Situational Awareness: TikTok Challenges
While 6th graders are not allowed to have cell phones or personal electronics during the school day, we believe it’s important to communicate situations that may impact students.

The incident must also be filmed or the challenge does not “count” (ODE, Situational Awareness Bulletin).

Please discuss this with your child as we want to be proactive in how we approach situational awareness. It’s important that we encourage positive decision making and following school expectations as a priority when it comes to the safety and well-being of our students and staff.

We will send your access code to the email address you used when you enrolled your child at West Clermont
Homecoming Tailgate for WC Alumni
West Clermont Education Foundation Alumni Tailgate will be held before the Homecoming Game on Friday, September 10th at 5:30 pm in the High School roundabout by the baseball stadium. This Tailgate is an excellent opportunity for alumni to register for our alumni association—and a chance to win free burgers for a year from Gold Star! There will be popcorn for all, a cornhole challenge, raffle baskets, and goodie bags for alumni that register.

Please make sure that you are following the West Clermont Stop the Spread Protocols including taking your student's temperature every day before school and keep them at home if they have any symptoms.
Car Riders
Students may arrive at school no earlier than 6:30am and go to their entrance.

Any fashion (dress, accessory, or hairstyle) that disrupts the educational process or presents a safety risk will not be permitted. Personal expression is permitted within these general guidelines. Modesty and decency are stressed.
Students shall dress in a manner that ensures the health, welfare and safety of the student body and enhances a respectful, positive, academic environment. In accordance with state health policies, shoes must be worn at all times.
Distracting or unsafe attire will be referred to the principal and/or his/her designee and dealt with individually. Examples of unacceptable attire include:
● Halter/tube tops, spaghetti-strap tops (dresses included), low cut shirts, tank tops, muscle shirts, and mesh or see-through tops. Shirt length on the arms should be to the top of the arm connecting to the shoulder
● Head apparel including hats, caps, hoods, bandanas unless approved for medical/religious reasons
● Shorts, skirts or dresses that are not of mid-thigh length or longer
● Unbuttoned shirts, crop tops, or bare midriffs
● Any visible undergarments, lack of undergarments, or any ill-fitting attire
● Pajamas and slippers
● Blankets
● Facial piercings that are a distraction
● Jeans with holes/tears above mid-thigh
● Any article of clothing, jewelry which displays, depicts, or promotes alcohol, drug, tobacco, violence or sexual innuendo, is prohibited during the day and at school sponsored activities
● Prohibition of clothing and accessories that display racial or ethnic slurs/symbols.
Consequences for violating the dress code will include changing the inappropriate attire along with possible removal from class, unexcused absence for being sent home to change clothes, a parent conference, and other possible disciplinary action.

An October 22, 1986, President Reagan signed the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA, Public Law 99-519). The act required the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to develop regulations for addressing asbestos in public and private elementary and secondary schools. On October 30, 1987, the EPA published the Asbestos-Containing Materials in Schools Rule (40 CFR Part 763 Subpart E). This rule stipulated, and our district has complied with, the following key requirements:
· Identification of asbestos-containing materials in all school buildings.
· Development and implementation of asbestos management plans for each school.
· Regular surveillance and reinspections of the condition of asbestos in the buildings.
· Designation and training of a person to oversee asbestos activities within the district and to ensure compliance with the regulations.
This memorandum is to advise you that asbestos management plans for the district schools were developed following the EPA ruling and subsequently approved by the State of Ohio, Department of Health. These plans are regularly updated and are available for you to review.
Should you have any questions regarding this program or would like to review an asbestos management plan, please contact the Board of Education offices during normal business hours.
We made it - ONE week! What a great first week we had welcoming our 6th graders. Nerves were certainly there but we hope that they saw lots of friendly faces, met really nice people, and are starting to feel at home in 6th grade. We are still working on ensuring our 6th graders understand what it means to be part of our 6th grade family, including some of the expectations. These are a few that we'll be focusing on in the coming week.
As a 6th grade family, we will always be RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE and SAFE people who are kind towards ourselves and others.
Dress Code: We try our best to ensure that students are in a safe and orderly learning environment where your child can focus. Following the dress code is an important part of this learning environment, including appropriate length shorts/skirts and appropriate t-shirt slogans. We do our very best to intervene at the beginning of the day if there is a dress code concern.
Cell Phones: In 6th grade, we do not allow cell phones in the classroom, hallways, restrooms, lunchroom or at recess. We want to encourage students to focus on connecting with their classmates. While we recognize you may use your child's cell phone to communicate important messages, please know that they should not check their cell phones during the day. You can always reach out to your child's homeroom teacher during the day or call the main office if you need us to get a message to your child.
6th Grade Materials: Students will use their Chromebooks in the classroom and it ALWAYS makes it easier if students have headphones with them. Please try to send your child with headphones they can keep in their backpack. If your child is unable to bring headphones with them, we will work diligently to make sure we can supply a pair.
Breakfast and Lunch: As a reminder, all students can get breakfast AND lunch for free. All students can get a free breakfast on their way in every morning. Even if they are bus riders, they can walk through the cafeteria and grab a breakfast to take with them.

Hi 6th Grade Families!
We are in our final days of preparing to welcome our 6th graders. This week's update includes our Back to School Newsletter which you can view here! You will receive an email from your child's homeroom teacher/team by Thursday evening - they will include information on what supplies students may drop off on Friday during the Meet the Teacher meetings.
Student Schedules: In 6th grade, each student receives their homeroom teacher before the start of the school year. When they arrive on the first day of school, they will then better understand what their day looks like. Our 6th grade experience is based upon making our students feel comfortable and welcomed from day 1 and we will make sure students understand how they will move through their day. Remember, that students will always be with teachers when they are transitioning throughout the day.
*Yesterday, you may have received a email from district regarding your PowerSchool login. If you do and login, you may see your child's schedule. Please know that this is not a direct representation of their school day; it is just a place holder for their classes. On the first or second day of school, your child's homeroom teacher will review your child's specials schedule.
Meet the Teacher/Family Event: On Friday (this Friday!) we are inviting our families and students to visit the building to meet their teacher and check out our learning spaces. This event is held from 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. You can sign up for a 20-minute meeting with your child's HOMEROOM teacher using the links below:

New Tools for Families
As we prepare for the start of the 2021-22 school year, we have been hard at work this summer upgrading and enhancing our Student Information System, communication tools, and business operations software. Since things are changing, we want to make sure that all families and staff members know about these tools, know how to use them, and are comfortable and prepared to start the school year.
Until our software upgrades are complete within the next few weeks, previous tools like EZPay and ProgressBook are no longer available. Your patience is appreciated during this time, and we can't wait for you to see our improvements. We believe all of these changes will simplify things, improve your experience (and hopefully reduce any frustration!) engaging with your child's school and our district.
Our next District Update on August 10th will include registration information such as how to update your child's contacts and medical information, directions for paying school fees, how to add money to meal accounts, and other information about our new tools. Stay tuned!

Schedules for 7th and 8th Grade Students
Families with students entering the 7th or 8th grade this fall will get their class schedules during schedule pick-up days on August 16th and 17th. More information to come, so stay tuned!
Welcome, 6th Grade Families:
We are so excited to welcome your child and family to our 6th grade family. This is an important transition year for your child and our priority is making sure your child knows we care about them and want to know who they are. You will be hearing from us VERY soon about your child's homeroom teacher. You will receive a letter in the mail at the beginning of August with information on our Back to School: Meet the Family Event on August 20 from 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 - 3:30 p.m. Your child will also receive their homeroom teacher information in this letter. Below you will find answers to common questions we hear in July.
When will we be able to visit the middle school?
On August 20, we are hosting our first ever Back to School: Meet the Family Event. During the day, students and their families will sign up for a 20 minute session with their child's teacher. You will have a chance to see the classroom, talk to your child's teacher, and share your goals for your child this year. We will also be providing student-led tours during this time and access to information from our school partners.
*We know some families will not be able to join us during this scheduled event and we will offer alternate times on Thursday, August 19 and Monday, August 23.
**You will receive information in early August to sign up for the Meet the Family meeting.
When will we get information about the school day, what my child needs, etc.?
At the beginning of August, you will receive our Back to School newsletter via email. This will introduce our staff, explain the 6th grade school day and answer questions about drop off/pick up, where to find bussing info, school lunch, etc. Don't worry!! (I'm a parent of 5 so I know it's important to EVERYONE that you understand what the day will look like before it happens!)
Will my child have a locker?
Students are no longer assigned lockers in grades 6 through 8. They can carry backpacks between classes.
We know that many of our students look forward to getting a locker in middle school. However, after last year we made the decision that not using lockers allowed for better supervision in the hallways and an increase in positive student behaviors during transition. Sixth grade students typically travel across the hall for their classes so they do not have to carry their backpacks very far.
Where can I find a school supply list?
You can find this year's school supply list here.
When is the first day of school for 6th grade?
Our 6th graders start on Tuesday, August 24. The first day of school only sixth graders are in the building which allows us to focus on their needs and help them become familiar with the school. We also spend time doing W.E.B. (Where Everybody Belongs) program which is co-led by our staff and 8th grade student leaders.
How can I make an adjustment to my address for transportation?
Reminder! If your K-8th grade student rides a school bus and requires a pick-up or drop-off location that is not at your home address, you need to submit a Transportation Request Form by August 3rd. All requests received by the Transportation Department by this date will be in effect for the start of school. If you submit these after August 3rd, transportation to the alternate address will not begin until the Monday after school starts. These are required annually so if you submitted one for your student last school year, you will need to submit one again. It is required to have the same pickup or drop-off location Monday-Friday. Please submit these forms by email to westcler@petermannbus.com or by fax at (513) 752-1503.
We know that some of our students are very nervous to start 6th grade and we want you to know that we keep that at the forefront of everything we plan to kick off the school year. We will be providing you with lots of answers before the first day of school and you can always reach out if you have questions that are specific to your child or your family.
Enjoy your summer! We can't wait to meet you in August!
Sincerely,
Tiffany Brennan
