SEV PD DAY 2020

SEV Academy, in collaboration with Üsküdar American Academy, is organizing a PD event entitled ‘Closing the Gap: Ensuring high school students have the language skills required to excel at university’ on Saturday, 15th February 2020.

English Medium Instruction (EMI) is an area of ever-increasing importance in Turkey. High schools are under pressure to ensure that their students have the language skills required to not only survive but also excel at university.

This conference aims to bring high school teachers together with university instructors to consider the importance of EMI by way of the keynote session led by one of the world’s leading experts in EMI, Dr. Mustafa Akıncıoğlu, Associate Researcher from the University of Oxford, as well as breakout sessions and closing panel.

This session examines recent additions to corpus-informed lexical lists for English for General Academic Purposes, and practical ways to turn the lists into learning activities that improve classroom communication, independent learning and performance in assessments.

"The Neuroscience-Based Learning Technique "

The focus is a novel learning technique that uncovers the brain mechanisms of non conscious learning and its educational framework for acquiring richer learning experiences and long-term memories.

"Supporting Academic Language Development: Noun Groups and Passive Voice"

This session will explore two important features of academic language, noun groups and the passive voice, and generate ways to increase students’ awareness and use of these features.

"Scaffolding Literary and Non-literary Analysis Skills 9-12 Grade."

This session will investigate various IB Lang/Lit skills, which can be used to design a prep-10th grade pre-IB curriculum. This pre-IB program works to provide the necessary literary and non-literary analytical skills for learners continuing with any program in 11th grade.

"Introduction of Academic Writing to High School EFL Students "

This presentation will address the need to teach academic writing skills as part of the national curriculum at secondary school to scaffold to enhance the quality of EAP in tertiary education in Turkey based on the reflections of such a project at an Anatolian High school.

"EMI Strategies in Action "

Using findings from the Oxford University EMI Turkey study conducted at selected Turkish universities in 2014, practical EMI strategies used to enhance curriculum delivery in English, particularly in STEM subjects to 2nd language learners, will be elucidated.

While scaffolding Language learning, students need to build up content relevant to specific environments. The EMS course aims to prepare students courses at faculty level with “assumed shared knowledge” of language competencies and topic knowledge.

"Language and Study Skills for Success in a Freshman Course in Social and Political Sciences"

We will explore strategies in narrative writing, with an emphasis on descriptive detail and the implicit thesis, in order to prepare students of all abilities for entry-level and college preparatory exercises in narrative and personal expression.

"Preparing Students to Study in English at a Turkish University"

The session concentrates on aspects of language teaching at the School of Foreign Languages, Marmara University, including relevant materials and class organization, that are used to prepare students for study in their respective disciplines in EMI.

In this presentation, using English as a medium of instruction in math classes to close the gap between high school and university will be the main focus. Instructional methods, international curriculums and competitions are followed at our school. The addition of student impressions shared during the presentation will provide a rare window into our learners' attitudes toward EMI instruction in high school.


"Science Literacy at Üsküdar American Academy"
