Rangitoto: Home Learning

These are guidelines and helpful notes for supporting your child's learning at home.

Reading

Readers: We are learning to read fluently. Please listen to your child practice their reader each day. Help them to fill in their Reading log and sign it to acknowledge your input. Some learners will receive a new reader each day, moving towards one every two days as they improve and texts increase in length. Please ensure they return these to school every day.

Sight words: Ākonga bring home a list of sight words to support reading at their level, up to level 14. The leaflets provide suggested ways to practising these. They should be quickly recognised rather than worked or sounded out.

Extra reading: Take some time to read other books, magazines, comics, instructions or newspaper headlines with your child.

Spelling

New spelling words are now coming home most weeks. The day on which the new words come home will depend on the learner's spelling class and group. Repetition and practice proves very effective in learning new words.

  • Say the word
  • Sound the word
  • Letters of the word aloud
  • Cover the word
  • Write the word without looking
  • Check the word
  • Repeat for each word
  • If you get it wrong, write it five times and try again.

Make practice interesting by alternating how they are written. For example:

  • writing the words with water using a paintbrush
  • learn to spell words from the essential word list
  • make the words with playdough or magnetic letters
