Written in 2011, The Martian is a near-future science fiction story set in the year 2035 about a manned mission to Mars. The story is told by Mark Watney through his journal entries. Watney is a man stranded on Mars after a storm forces his crewmates to leave him behind. He is left with little food and is forced to be innovative to contact Earth and then survive until the next mission comes to pick him up. The book touches heavily on isolation and how people deal with the sense of loneliness and the struggle for survival.
