Jo McNamara and Hazel Pennington have been appointed as National Macmillan Therapeutic Radiography Clinical Fellows.
These roles are funded by Health Education England, and have been created by Macmillan Cancer Support, in collaboration with the SCoR.
Jo McNamara is currently a Senior Lecturer in Radiotherapy Oncology at Sheffield Hallam University and is course leader and leads on recruitment.
Hazel Pennington is the Principal Therapeutic Radiographer for proton beam therapy at the Christie NHS Foundation Trust.
The aim of the role is:
Identifying and capturing the diversity of roles by Therapeutic Radiographers currently within the UK
Informing and supporting the promotion of different Therapeutic Radiographer roles across the oncology pathways
Advising on relevant learning and development content for professionals provided by Macmillan
Working with Macmillan, the SoR and HEE to raise the public profile of the Therapeutic Radiography role.

Jo sits on the Reducing Pre-registration Attrition and Improving Retention (RePAIR) AHP board, looking at implementation strategy.
Hazel is working with Macmillan on developing the resources on the website for brain cancer patients.

Jo is working with the Macmillan team on developing e-learning modules to sit on the e-learning for health website about personalised care, prehabilitation and rehabilitation. This will be a great way for therapeutic radiographers to develop their skills and knowledge in this area and develop the support we offer patients.
We are looking at creating a children's book about radiotherapy and the role of the therapeutic radiographer.
We are working with the Macmillan team to revamp the Macmillan website and create resources specifically for therapeutic radiographers.
We are looking at all the therapeutic radiography materials in the public domain and checking for accuracy and contributing where we can.
We are working on producing some mini adverts to promote the role and scope of practice of therapeutic radiographers.
We are working on developing resources for Girlguiding, Scouting and St. Johns Ambulance to help raise the profile of radiotherapy and the role of the Therapeutic Radiographer in the treatment of cancer.
We are creating a questionnaire to send out to oncologists, therapeutic radiographers and managers about our scope of practice, so keep an eye out! This will form a large piece of work where we hope to make future recommendations.
We both sit on the Macmillan AHP Expert Practice Group.
