Speaker profiles

Keynote speaker - Helen Lowes, National Lead for Education and Training for ODP, Health Education England

Helen is a qualified and registered ODP. Though Helen's most recent clinical activity as an ODP is in the field of obstetrics to support maternity services during COVID, she has experience working in gynaecology, neurosurgery, and interventional radiology.

Helen is a member of AfPP, CODP, and sits on the CODP Education and Standards committee. Helen is a peer reviewer for the Journal of Perioperative Practice and visitor for the HCPC.

Helen has over 15 years experience in the higher education sector and has led on two degree programmes. She also led the development of simulation and clinical skills for the Department of Allied Health Professions and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

In January 2020, Helen returned to the NHS as a senior manager leading a team in learning and development to oversee all student placements in allied health and nursing & midwifery across the trust as well as delivery of the Nursing Associate training programme, and work experience.

Helen is passionate about ODP and AHP workforce education and development. In Helen's current role she works with a team to scope innovation and the education and training requirements for our future AHP  workforce.

Keynote speaker - Dawn Stott, CEO, Association for Perioperative Practice

Dawn has worked in healthcare for around 30 years in many different roles. During that time she undertook an Open University certificate in Management which provided the learning to underpin her knowledge and experience.

Dawn worked for a private hospital group in various different roles and has managed a 9,000 patient GP practice in Headingley, Leeds. This provided her with an all-round understanding of healthcare from primary care commissioning through to secondary care intervention.

Her previous roles have included commissioning new hospital builds, commissioning new GP surgery builds, IT implementation programmes, customer care training strategies including human factors and quality improvement initiatives. She has a strong interest in writing and had had many articles published in the trade presses.

Dawn joined AfPP in June 2009 as Director of Operations and moved into the role of CEO in October 2009.

Giles Farrington

Lead ODP Critical Care and Resuscitation, York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Giles has been an ODP for 28 years, 11 in the military and 17 in the NHS. His professional interest is in critical care, transfer medicine and resuscitation as well as education within the perioperative environment. Giles is undertaking his MSc at Hull York Medical School (HYMS) Health Professions Education Unit  studying the role of the ODP in the post-COVID critical care environment. Giles has educational interests in assessment, feedback and simulation and is and Advanced Life Support Instructor for AtoE Training and Solutions Limited.

Brighton Karimakwenda

GTA PhD student, Health Research Institute, Sheffield Hallam University

Brighton qualified and registered as an ODP in 2018 and gained 2 years experience of day Care and Main Theatres at Darent Valley, Dartford and Gravesham NHS Turst, Kent. Brighton went on to complete a  MSc in Public Health working in population health services under the health protection team of Manchester City Council and the NHS Commissioning partnership (now ICS) as a Health protection practitioner. Brighton is now in his 2nd year of PhD study which is focused on the research capacity and culture within the ODP workforce.

Daniel Rodger

Senior Lecturer in Operating Department Practice, London South Bank University

Daniel is a registered ODP who specialised in neonatal and paediatric anaesthetic care before moving into higher education in 2016. He is now a senior lecturer at London South Bank University, and his primary research interests are in the areas of bioethics, perioperative care, with an emphasis on the ethical issues related to xenotransplantation. Since 2022 he has been a part-time PhD student in Psychology at Birkbeck, University of London. He also co-edited the Fundamentals of operating Department Practice, 2nd Edition.

Mike Donnellon

Chair, Education and Standards Committee, CODP

Mike is Chair of the College of Operating Department Practitioners Education and Standards Committee, has academic experience as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Central Lancashire, and clinical experience at Blackpool Victoria Hospital where he commenced his ODP (ODA) career in 1983.

Mike co-ordinates the Clinical and University Educator (CUE) Forums and also represents the College on several national groups including the Health Education England ODP Expert Group, the Allied Health Professions Public Health Strategy Board, and the Health and Care Professions Education Leads group. Mike also represented the College on the ODP Degree Apprenticeship Trailblazer group.

Rob Brothwood

Anaesthesia Associate Trainee (ODP registered), Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Rob graduated as an ODP in 2005, working predominantly in anaesthetics. In 2019, Rob was successful in applying for NHS England's Clinical Entrepreneur scheme, becoming the first ODP in the country to do so. This followed Rob's innovation work inventing along with a colleague an new airway securing device.

In 2022, Rob was asked to put together a new national conference working alongside the EBME Expo. It has now grown to be the largest of its type in the UK.

Frankie Milton

Senior lecturer in ODP, Sheffield Hallam University/ AHP and NMC WorkforceDevelopment Manager, Spectrum CIC

Frankie began her career as an ODP in 2008 for Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust. An interest in education developed from mentoring students in the clinical environment. In 2012 Frankie successfully secured employment as an ODP lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University. Throughout 10 years of her employment with SHU, she has undertaken many roles and progressed to Senior Lecturer.  

Frankie began a secondment role with Spectrum Community Health, and this has now become a permanent position as Clinical Workforce Growth Manager. Spectrum is a social enterprise delivering community and offender healthcare services on behalf of the NHS, Local Authority Public Health services, and other partners across the North of England.

Jessica Williams

Senior ODP, Chelsea and Westminster NHS Trust

Jessica graduated from Cardiff University in 2019 joining Chelsea and Westminster Trust in late 2019. From there, she worked through COVID taking an interest in teaching and ODP progression, herself progressing to a band 6 role. jessica has completed a year long Digital Health and Quality Improvement fellowship which successfully allowed her gain funding for all the ODPs she manages to complete ALS courses. Jess is  a simulation and ALS instructor and I am really passionate about learning through SIM. She is currently working on a project with HEE to identify the pros and cons of the ODP workforce in London.

Victoria Cadman

Senior lecturer, Sheffield Hallam University

Victoria graduated from SHU as an ODP in 2010 and worked in a variety of NHS trusts before joining SHU as a lecturer in 2015. Whilst at SHU, she has undertaken a number of roles and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.  Victoria has always had a strong interest in research and is currently studying towards PhD exploring migrant women's experiences of Caesarean section. 

Victoria is also an External Examiner for Edge Hill University and in 2022 was appointed as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Perioperative Practice.
