Music and Makaton

We know that music works many parts of the brain, can act as a distraction perfect for healthcare situations that can be overwhelming, and make communication fun. Using signs while singing really reinforces the sign with the word and helps people learn Makaton. See below for some fun examples, Diamond Activity and Therapeutic Services is part of RDaSH, they support people with learning disabilities, using music as a therapeutic activity and a tool for information sharing (see the 12 days of PPE)

Gwen enjoys music, we know that her parents use music as a distraction, but also as a way of getting Gwen settled for procedures and in a positive mind set. While we understand that you will not be fluent enough to sign to songs that Gwen enjoys, there are many songs available on You Tube and other platforms that are already signed that you can use. Showing Gwen that you are aware of Makaton and symbols will enable her to settle and understand that you know what she needs.
