Maximizing Academic Potential
Where is the Learning Commons located?
We are located in the second floor of the Carl A. Rudisill Library.
What is the difference between Individual and Group Tutoring?
Individual tutoring entails a student meeting in a one-on-one session with a tutor; this is normally for classes with less sections and small sizes, for which we do not offer group tutoring. Group tutoring entails multiple students meeting with one tutor; this is offered for classes with many sections and students, due to the high demand of tutoring and shorter supply of tutors.
How do I know which one I’m going to receive?
Tutoring services are offered on a “supply-and-demand” basis. So, classes of larger sizes and more sections serve many students; these classes often have group tutoring available. All other classes are tutored on a “case-by-case” basis, assigning a student to an individual tutor. When you request tutoring assistance, you will either be paired with an individual tutor or directed to one of our many group tutoring sessions. To see what classes are group tutored, see the “Group Tutoring Schedule” on this site’s “Home” page.
How many group tutoring sessions can I attend?
You may attend as many as you like! Depending on demand/need for tutoring services for a class, between 1-4 group tutoring sessions are held on a weekly basis. Typically, each group session is hosted by a different tutor, so you have the benefit of receiving assistance from a variety of student tutors.
Can I drop into a group tutoring session or do I have to be there at the start of the session and stay the entire time?
Drop-ins are always welcome! No student is required to attend the entirety of a group tutoring session. All are welcome to join and leave at any time during the session.
What is the Academic Coaching Program and who can qualify for this program?
Academic Coaching can be defined as “Academic Coaching is a working partnership that focuses on the process of learning. Together with a professional coach, students examine their learning styles, habits of working, and current difficulties or barriers to success. Then together this team (coach and student) works to create and put in place more effective strategies than are the norm. The aim is to heighten awareness of what it takes to achieve academic success and anchor this with new strategies, a supportive relationship, and personal accountability”
Our Academic Coaching Program takes that definition and houses that idea within a peer partnership model that also focuses on what types of thoughts and actions are needed to be academic productive in an online/hybrid environment that we are experiencing this semester. The Peer Mentor program is based on one-on-one zoom session hang-outs with current LR undergraduate students. It is a program given by students for ALL students who wish to have a "peer-buddy" that may give them some insight in general academic needs and online learning skills.
Your academic coaching partner will work with you through a weekly or bi-weekly check-in session on study strategies, test preparation, time management and help you stay focused and motivated in your online coursework. You can also discuss weekly assignments, upcoming exams or projects, as well as strategies for completing your academic work both efficiently and effectively. Your academic coaching partner understands the challenges you are facing because they are students, too! Positive and judgement-free, your academic coach/partner’s goal is to help YOU!
If you’re interested in benefiting from this FREE resource, click on the link on the “Home” page labelled “Academic Coaching Program”, and then click on the “Academic Support & Tutoring Services Request Form”. When completing this request form, you can choose the “Academic Coaching” service and that will get you paired with an amazing academic coaching partner!
What is my level of commitment for participating in the Academic Coaching Program?
Students may be encouraged to attend coaching sessions on a weekly or bi-weekly basis based on their coaching partners’ recommendations; however, it is ultimately the student’s decision on when/how often they meet with their academic coaching partner. If at any point in time a student wishes to no longer participate in the program, they are welcome to discontinue their involvement.
