Career

Mike Penberthy went undrafted in 1997 after a standout college career at The Master's College, where he set multiple school records and hit a three-pointer in 111 consecutive games. Before making it to the NBA, he struggled with injuries, was cut from minor league teams, played in Germany and Venezuela, and worked as a forklift driver during the 1998 lockout. His big break came in 2000 when the Los Angeles Lakers signed him. He played 56 games as a point guard for the franchise and won an NBA championship alongside Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal in 2001. After his NBA stint, Penberthy played overseas in Italy and Germany for several years, winning a German Cup in 2006.

He later transitioned into coaching as an NBA shooting coach and assistant. He returned to the Lakers as an assistant coach and won a second NBA championship in 2020, followed by coaching roles with the Denver Nuggets and Dallas Mavericks.
