The Santa Monica Pier Carousel's history began in 1916 with the construction of the Looff Hippodrome by Charles Looff, who installed his own carousel. In 1947, after the pier changed hands, his original carousel was replaced by a 1922 Philadelphia Toboggan Company carousel, #62, which was moved from the Venice Pier and is the carousel seen there today. This historic carousel, with its 44 hand-carved horses, remains a beloved landmark
