Ginsburg was born in a time where discrimination against Jews (like herself) and women was very high. Despite these challenges, Ginsburg still followed her dreams of becoming a lawyer, and attending college. In the beginning of her career as a lawyer, she had difficult time being hired because she was a women and had a four year old daughter. These difficulties along with her experiences as a women in the 1950s and 1960s motivated her to fight for womens rights. When Ginsburg was finally hired at a law firm, she got to work. In her 1973 case, Frontiero v Richardson, the judge ruled that benefits given to the family of military service members could not be given out differently based on sex. Ruth Bader Ginsburg was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1993 by President Bill Clinton. She served until her death in 2020.

Angelou faced family drama and racial discrimination throughout her lifetime, but was able to overcome these challenges and express herself through singing and writing. In the beginning of her life, Angelou lived with her grandmother and brother in racially discriminative Arkansas. At just age seven, Angelou was molested by her mother's boyfriend, who was killed days later. Thinking her words had killed the man, Angelou stopped speaking for six years. Later Aneglou moved to San Francisco, where she had her first son (Guy Johnson) at 16 years old. Angelou’s life had been traumatic, but she overcame this trauma through singing and writing. A few of her accomplishments include become part of the Harlem Writers Guild (1959), being active in the civil rights movement as the Northern Cordinator of Dr Martin Luther King Jr's Southern Leadership Conference, and publishing book including ‘’I Know why the Caged Bird Sings.’’

Kahlou experienced many struggles in her life, but used her art to overcome these struggles. At the age of 18, Kalou was traveling by bus, and the bus was hit by a street car. This caused her to have severe injuries, and confined her to a wheel chair for the remainder of her life. When Kalou was in the hospital for these injuries, she painted and was able to preserve through her pain. But her pain did not end there, and Frida struggled for the rest of her life with chronic pain. She struggled with physical and emotional pain, and could not have children due to her injuries. This caused Frida to fall into a deep depression which she overcame through painting. Frida continued painting through her pain when she was going through a divorce, and when she felt physically and emotionally weak. One of her most famous paintings ‘’The Two Fridas’’ was made after she divorced her husband and depicted a sense of loss.

So how can you perservere like these women did?
Perseverance is being able to overcome struggle after struggle, and get back up again. You must find someone of something that motivates you to persevere. In Ginsburg’s case her dreams of becoming a lawyer encouraged her persevere. In Angelou and Kalou’s case, their passions motivated them to keep persevering through life. What motivates you?
