...only to be immediately greeted by the terrifying visage of Dog, her lip curled up tight into a vicious snarl, fangs bared at the ready.
"Dog!" Cat yowled, her hackles raised stiff and straight as she struggled to comprehend the image before her, one plucked from the inner recesses of her worst nightmare. "But–! But–! But–! How?! How can this be?! I saw Man throw you into the water! You cannot swim! You drowned that day! Is this a dream?! Am I seeing ghosts?! How can you be here?! You are not smart enough to know how to swim as well as Fish does, much less as well as I do!"
Dog did not answer her stupefied stammers, nor did she release Cat from her piercing glare. Instead, she emitted a frightening growl, and lunged at Cat with a sharp snap of her powerful jaws.
Fish watched in wonder as Dog chased Cat out from both the cove and the ocean, the latter hissing and hollering as soon as her paws stumbled back onto the safety of the shore. She spent the remainder of the evening pacing the sands, back and forth, cursing Dog for her newfound ability to swim, cursing Fish for his cleverness in fooling her, and cursing Man for his idiocy in attempting to rid himself of Dog by drowning her.
Since then, Cat has never dared to set foot in so much as a single drop of water, a fear and a hatred that all her descendants share. Though they cannot explain exactly as to why this is so, any time one of Cat's many kits approach water, the chilling feeling that Dog is waiting for them there– hidden deep within the fathoms below, poised to attack– keeps them grounded on land for good.
