WHAT IS A SPECIALIST HIGH SCHOOL MAJOR (SHSM)?

The SHSM program offers students the opportunity to explore a specific area or career of interest and to acquire the skills and experience that will assist them in their post-secondary pathway: Apprenticeship, College, University & the Workplace.

Each SHSM program includes:

  • 8-10 bundled Senior Credits, including four Major Sector Credits

  • Sector Recognized Certifications and Safety Awareness Training

  • Experiential Learning

  • Use of the Ontario Skills Passport

  • "Reach Ahead" Experiences

STUDENTS IN THE SHSM PROGRAM HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO:

  • Customize their secondary school education to suit their interests and talents through a specialized bundle of credits

  • Explore, identify & refine career goals

  • Make informed decisions regarding post secondary education destinations

  • Access resources, equipment & expertise that may not be available in their home secondary school

  • Receive a special SHSM red seal designation on their diplomas

  • Network with potential employers

CAREER PATHWAYS IN THE ART & DESIGN SHSM:

Students will work alongside educators and community partners to achieve major credits, certifications, experiential learning programs, job shadowing, job twinning, career explorations, and work experience.
