K-2 begins the year learning what their body can do and the different parts of the body needed for class activity. This includes muscles, parts of the body, the heart and how they are all linked together in helping to keep us healthy. After they have a good idea of these concepts through different movement activities we move on to various pieces of equipment that helps to exercise the different parts of our body as well as working on visual tracking, hand-eye coordination and manipulation of the equipment. This includes scarves, deck rings, hula hoops, jump ropes, bean bags, lummi sticks, various types of balls and balloons.
We then spend time working with the hanging ropes to help develop upper body strength and boxes to learn how to jump and land properly, as well as basic gymnastic movement... rocking, rolling, forward and backward somersaults and partner balances. The last part of the year we put everything we have learned together so we can do exercises and activities that involve the whole class at once. This is done with the parachute and quickly becomes one of the all time favorite activities for the students!Grades 3-8 work on learning and developing skills that are necessary for the games and activities that we will be playing. These activities include individual sports, team sports, lifetime sports and cooperative games and activities. Over the course of the year these students will be introduced to a number of activities that will keep them moving and energized and give them an even better understanding of the importance of a healthy body.
