February 7, 2024:

I sent out emails to the Seniors today for the students planning to attend college. Below is what they received.

Seniors going to College Please make sure you are working on the things below. (Remember when you are doing anything beyond high school you are using a personal email. Your high school email will no longer work after graduation.)

Step 1:

If you are going to college you will need to fill out FASFA paperwork. To do this you and a parent will have to have a FSA ID. Some parents may already have an FSA ID, if they do they need to use that same ID. Students must create an FSA ID. I am attaching a link to create this. click on the link and then click on the blue box that says "GET STARTED" and follow the instructions.

Reminder: Students make sure that you use a personal email address NOT the school one. This ID you will use every year so you must write it down and keep it. I do not have access to any of this.

ADE's Division of Higher Education to Conditionally Approve Scholarships

While Federal Government Addresses FAFSA Problems

LITTLE ROCK — To ensure qualified Arkansas students do not experience a notification delay regarding much-needed scholarships, the Arkansas Department of Education’s Division of Higher Education will conditionally approve state scholarships while the federal government addresses problems associated with the 2024-2025 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.

“There is no question that higher education serves an important role in success beyond high school, and for many students, furthering their education is not possible without state and federal financial assistance,” Dr. Ken Warden, ADHE commissioner, said. “Arkansas students, however, should not be penalized or face needless worry regarding funding because of improper planning by the federal government. We are pleased to provide reassurance to these students, who can feel confident in their state applications.”

The federal government released the 2024-2025 FAFSA form on December 31, 2023; however, the release has resulted in challenges and issues for Arkansas students and their families. Problems stem from the limited and intermittent windows of time available for students to access their application, as well as multiple technical issues that have occurred during students’ attempts to complete the form. Additionally, state financial aid programs have been affected procedurally by the delay in receiving FAFSA information.

Between 18,000 and 25,000 Arkansas students apply each year for state scholarships, such as the Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship and the Governor’s Distinguished Scholarship. The application process requires students to complete the FAFSA. The deadline to apply for the Governor’s Distinguished Scholarship remains March 1, and July 1 is the deadline for the other state scholarships. Because of issues with the federal FAFSA application, students conditionally approved have until August 1, 2024, to complete the FAFSA portion to finalize the award.

***I have scheduled some colleges to come to school and help seniors with their college registration and scholarship questions. Each college is a little different in how things work. Below is a list of the colleges that have committed to coming so far. This information is also on the Mountain View High School Google calendar. All of the visits will take place in the High School Library. If you plan to attend please let your 6th period teacher know ahead of time in case you are a few minutes late for 6th period. If you are registered or plan to attend one of these colleges then you will need to attend!

November 14th: Ozarka College 12:30

November 17th: University of Arkansas 12:30

November 28th: UCA at 12:30

December 5th: Tech at 12:30

December 8th: A-State at 12:30 (I did ask about Academic scholarships and they have changed what they told me when I went to the meeting in September. A-state is now requiring an ACT and GPA minimum for each of the academic scholarships. But they are not due until Feb. 1st. She will discuss this more when she comes to visit.)

***Priority academic scholarships for most colleges end on November 15th. These are scholarships given by the colleges for a 3.0 GPA and above. To apply for these scholarships you usually just have to be registered before the date ends to be guaranteed the scholarship. Again the date I have heard the most is November 15th.
