Mountain View High School is proud of its competitive field Marching Band, which is open to all performers. Prior musical or dance experience is recommended but not necessary for Winds, Percussion, or Color Guard.
Color Guard is an integral component to the Marching Band. The Guard serves as the visual representation of the music through dance and the use of various equipment such as flags, rifles, and sabres. The guard performs at the fall competition shows, campus events and community functions.
During the first quarter this class meets after school on Mondays and Thursdays and all day Saturdays. Summer training is offered for Color Guard and Percussion.
Marching Band and Color Guard (auxiliary) meet August through November and perform at many local competitions beginning in October. Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is required. Students are expected to attend a summer Band Camp preceding the beginning of school. Because most activities associated with Marching Band occur during the first quarter, students are encouraged to concurrently enroll in another, year-long musical group such as Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, or Chamber Ensemble.

Marching Band Attire Guide
Symphonic Band is designed as the entry-level band performance ensemble. The band performs as a group for several concerts and festivals throughout the year. Band students of all levels are welcome to join. Older students may and are encouraged to take this course as developing leaders, or to hone their skills on secondary instruments. Occasionally this group will travel, though they do not tour every time. Most recently we traveled to Seattle in 2025.
Wind Ensemble is designed as an advanced course for primarily 11th- through 12th-grade musicians playing appropriate band instruments. All genres of traditional and contemporary music are studied and performed at several concerts during the year. This group travels every other year, most recently to Seattle in 2025, Chicago in 2024 and Hawaii in 2022.
Winter Percussion and Winter Guard are both parts of the Winter Auxiliary program. This competitive program rehearses from November through April.
Orchestra is for beginning- to intermediate-level musicians. Orchestra is designed for students who play traditional string instruments (Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass; occasionally harp or piano). The Orchestra performs as a group for several concerts and festivals. Occasionally this group will travel, though they do not tour every time. Most recently we traveled to Seattle in 2025.
Chamber Ensemble is designed for advanced students who play traditional string instruments (Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass; occasionally harp or piano). The Chamber Ensemble performs as a group for several concerts throughout the year and hosts the semi-annual Chamber Concert series. This group travels every other year, most recently to Seattle in 2025, Chicago in 2024 and Hawaii in 2022.
