MVGS Humanities 12: Political Philosophy and US Government
Humanities 12 introduces students to the key philosophies, institutions, policies, and behaviors of political systems. Students will learn to apply disciplinary reasoning to assess the causes and consequences of political events, interpret data to develop evidence-based arguments, and defend political positions and solutions while cultivating ethical dispositions and leadership skills which can be applied to contemporary, domestic, and international problems. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be prepared for the AP Exam in United States Government and Politics. Students will earn one US Government credit.
Student may dual enroll in PLS 241- International Relations and PLS 135- American Politics and Government while taking Humanities 12.
MVGS Senior Capstone Project
The MVGS Capstone Project is included in the elective course for seniors. During the the 2022-23 school year, I will supervise seniors enrolled in Psychology with their SCP.
Students will develop and implement a plan to address a current issue, conduct research for competition and/or publication, compete in engineering design fairs and/or challenges, or participate in an internship. These activities may further extend the MVGS Independent Research Project or initiate new projects. Further individualized options are possible but will require formal faculty approval.
Economics
This course covers Macro (Fall), Micro (Spring), and the Personal Finance requirements for the state of Virginia.
During the fall semester, the course will cover the fundamental macroeconomic concepts, theories, and issues including the study of scarcity and opportunity cost, supply and demand, national economic growth, inflation, recession, unemployment, fiscal and monetary policies, and international trade. Develops an appreciation of how these economic concepts apply to consumer, business, and government decisions, and their effect on the overall economy.
During the spring semester, the course will cover the fundamental microeconomic concepts, theories, and issues including the study of scarcity and opportunity cost, supply and demand, elasticities, marginal revenues and costs, profits, production and distribution. Develops an appreciation of how these economic concepts apply to consumer and business decisions, and their effect on the individual. Students will also be completing EVERFI self-learning modules to complete requirements for Wise Testing.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be prepared for the both of the AP Micro and AP Macro exams. However, students are only "required" to take the AP Macro exam. The AP Micro exam is an optional exam for students taking the course.
Psychology
This Psychology course introduces students to the systematic and scientific study of human behavior and mental processes. While considering the psychologists and studies that have shaped the field, students explore and apply psychological theories, key concepts, and phenomena associated with such topics as the biological bases of behavior, sensation and perception, learning and cognition, motivation, developmental psychology, testing and individual differences, treatment of abnormal behavior, and social psychology. Throughout the course, students employ psychological research methods, including ethical considerations, as they use the scientific method, analyze bias, evaluate claims and evidence, and effectively communicate ideas.
