All K-5 students in Corvallis receive six Bike and Pedestrian Safety Education lessons each year. These lessons are taught by physical education teachers with support from the classroom teachers. The School District provides administrative support to ensure the program runs smoothly.
During Bike Education, students learn essential skills, including understanding the rules of the road, performing safety checks on their bikes, and properly adjusting their helmets. Practical exercises include practicing starting and stopping, making left and right turns, understanding intersection right of way, and participating in a community ride.
These skills are reinforced in middle school during a Bicycling Unit in PE classes.
Students with disabilities participate in Bike Education alongside their peers whenever possible. When additional support is needed, instruction is adapted through inclusive and adaptive physical education services, including programs such as Wings and Bridges, to ensure all students can safely and meaningfully engage in bike education.
MVBC supplies 4 trailers, 190 bikes, and hundreds of helmets. Club members help with on-going maintenance of the bikes, class instruction and supervision during community rides.
Our latest initiative is to provide a Traffic Garden at each of the neighborhood schools. The target date for completion of this project is September 2026.
Our bicycle helmet program provides free helmets at many local events. MVBC also partners with local Fire Departments, School Districts, and non-profits to distribute helmets for kids in need. Over the years the Mid-Valley Bike Club has given away several thousand helmets!
